you DON"T see something like this very often. WOWZA (error coin)

kinda makes ya wonder when it broke off since the coin circulated down to xf40 before breakin' off.

Amazing the smaller piece was recovered. Maybe a pocket piece just waiting for it to break clean?

Considering the wear, does the break hurt the value of what was likely a planchet flaw?
imo, even if it were to have been "assisted" in coming apart completely, cracked plachets are desirable for sure, especially big ones but i'd hands-down pay up much more for a completely separated as close to legit as possible broken dollar. fwiw
i've had decent peace and morgan cracked planchets that didn't garner much interest dollar-wise and they were nice, imo.
I recently sold a Lincoln cent that had separated like this coin, see below. I thought that coin was neat but I cannot even imagine a Morgan dollar. What an awesome pair.

Very cool. Makes me think of a spy movie: "Your contact will have the matching piece of the silver dollar....
I sold Northern Nevada Coin the most famous broken coin of all time:
I've posted this one before. FWIW, the green is not PVC. It doesn't come off with acetone, and it doesn't look particularly rough either. I wonder if it represents impurities that were present in the original copper strip and contributed to the split in the first place.

nice.
i've enjoyed seein' it on their site for a LONG time now.
Lance- I sold it to Allen at the 1999 Chicago ANA. Even back then we both knew it was special!!
These are super interesting.... I have never found a 'broken' coin... Though I have seen a few at coin shows... I think that most are likely discarded - if a cent or a nickel - or if larger, swapped at a bank for a good coin. Cheers, RickO
Yes. That error dollar is legendary.
It doesn't really matter to me, but just sayin:
Those coins had to have made their way to collectors who knew what they were, or just plain curious individuals. They are what they are...........but had to be "helped" a little IMHOP.

The legendary broken CC Morgan Dollar is featured in my book. Even 20 years later
( after selling it), and 12 years later ( after my book was published), I still get asked if the broken CC is available for sale. It’s a spectacular mint error!
Allen has many nice error coins, but has told me that the Broken CC Morgan Dollar is his favorite by far.
Nice one!
