1796 Draped Bust Dime - Variety JR-2

EddiEddi Posts: 557 ✭✭✭✭✭

The earliest-dated member of my early dime collection. It is still raw as when I bought it in the 1990's.
The pictures do not do it justice, as the reverse surfaces actually have some iridescence when examined under a light.
I would greatly appreciate your opinions on this coin.

Thank you!

AU50 and lovely, if it is has life under the grey it could easily 53 or 55. If it is dead and matte a 45 is possible but the fabric speaks to choice AU leveled off of luster.

Fresh Market preferred look that would attract plenty of dealer and collector interest if it was to circulate.

I would agree with AU50... and lovely.... For me, if the coin's date starts with a 17... Well, I am lost in love at that point. ;) Cheers, RickO

Very cool coin to see still in the wild like that.

For sure. A coin like that surfacing at FUN or the ANA would likely change hands multiple times.

Yeah, that coin is a real prize.
Around 50 or sliglower seems fair to me too on technical basis, however as mentioned the original look is highly favorable so net 52 imo

Nice coin. Love that it is still raw. Some people think there has to be something wrong with a coin if it isn't slabbed. I think many people just like their coins and don't necessarily have to slab them. Again nice coin with a nice look.

Sorry, I just can't get on board with the AU crowd. 35-45 in my eyes, want to see it in hand.

Lovely coin, I haven't studied these too much, it looks a lot like the 35-40 examples in PCGS Photograde, imo

After looking at several pictures of XF and AU examples, my guesstimate is XF45.

I am with feld, I like it as a 45+. I have owned a couple, and seen a lot, and I also do like it,

On reconsideration ,I will go with 45. It is better than my 35 coin.

  • That is an amazing dime!

The 6/5 is a cool coin and the value is about $10k+ but given the current market that values true rarity and higher conditions, it very well would make more at auction esp if fully holdered in pcgs + cac

Thank you for this additional information. I was planning on having part of my U.S collection encapsulated last year, but the pandemic has forced me to delay this. Having never done this does not make things easier, but I will have to force myself at some stage in the new future.

The grading game is best played with your end goal in mind. Just grading to put them away can be done at most large shows in person to include signing up. For resale, you should work with a dealer to target which make sense and which is better to sell raw. That said you 1796/5 dime is worth considerably more holdered. Dealers will always price their downside into their offers, 5 figure raw coins have quite a bit of downside if gauged incorrectly.
