If by 'had it for awhile', you probably mean in the
past year or two, or whenever it was counterfeited.
Looks like a way better fake than most, if it didn’t have that date many here would call it real, Environmental damage.

I know. I'm seeing multiple users have repeat posts currently... I'm wondering if there is an error on the website causing that. I was just pointing out that his username says he has one coin... and this is the only one. So where did he get it? China would be my guess.
I found it about 6-8 years ago in my change never saw it before so I just held onto it trying to find out more about it

Why would they make a fake one? That’s the problem I can wrap my head around you can’t sell it to the average joe and anyone that can afford it would really check it out. Makes no sense
I have to admit, I certainly did not expect to see a 1913 Liberty nickel, real or fake, when I clicked on this thread....
I suspect it was made as a novelty item, not intended to pass as a 7 figure coin.
Often, copies are, in fact, sold to “the average Joe”, who can afford them (at seemingly bargain prices). And the “Joe’s” might check the coins out after they’ve bought them and then learn that their purchases really were too good to be true.

So someone takes the time to mint a fake coin which I’m sure take 5mins and no skill goes to the average joe ( who has to somehow know about the rarity of this coin ) and tells him this is a multi million dollar coin I’ll give it to you for $1000 not knowing anything about coins and buys it. So he can flip it for millions, yeah not buying it there’s got to be a better reason for this.
It's a shame it's got that rim nick at 4 o'clock....
A lot of them are sold for $20 or less as hole fillers. They are not necessarily designed to fool anyone.

Suit yourself. I’m frequently asked about counterfeit 1913 Liberty nickels, 1804 dollars, Continental dollars and other valuable coins, by people who have bought them for bargain prices at estate sales, on eBay, at flea markets, etc.

This is true, but I don't think deception was the original intent of a lot of those. Some were East Asian souvenirs. Some were replica hole fillers. I don't think most of them were designed to fool collectors or even non-collectors.

It is a fake, there could be several reasons it was made - most of which are mentioned above. And, even if you cannot accept it, one of the reasons is definitely to sell to an inexperienced person. And it often works. Cheers, RickO

I just wanted to understand why would they make a fake and at least some of you gave me answers that make sense. It is much appreciated. The other ones that just spew jealousy and hate with there holier than thou attitude you can go Fxxk yourselves with a long stack of coins. ( I’m sure there’s a proper name for that but like I said I only have one not in this game)

I hope that's not because he accused some respondents of spewing jealousy and hatred and was extremely crude. I can't think of anyone who would be jealous of someone who owned that coin and I saw nothing hateful posted, except perhaps, by him.

I can't explain why someone would bid on that ebay auction, but there is money in selling it if you can get past ebay's anti-counterfeit hammer.
Someone would bid in that auction, primarily, for one of two reasons. 1) They don't know that it's a copy and they think they're getting a steal or 2) They do know (or suspect it), but figure they can sell it for a profit to someone else who doesn't know.

Yeah, but I'm talking about real ones. That one's clearly got an altered date. Looks like a 1918 turned into 1913.
If I had a genuine 1918 Liberty nickel I don't think I'd turn it into the more common 1913 Liberty nickel!

Just kidding it looks like real. Those blotchy spots are not fake. Now that being said It may have been cleaned of even "harshly cleaned", but its a REAL COIN alright! (unlike the replica proof). What's it worth - ask coinflation. or give it the kid down the block and make a new collector for us old guys!
The OP's coin? It is not an altered date. It is definitely a straight-up counterfeit. The lettering in CENTS is wrong. The digits in the date are too consistent with each other (and with the pull-away toning) for one of them to have been altered sometime between manufacture and toning/dirtying and now.
