Is this an error coin or has someone been messing with it. I'm in the messing with it category a few dealer friends think error and a few say maybe........

What say you?

IMO, a badly damaged circulated coin that had a clamshell error that got tore off.

Too damaged to be worth any premium.

Going by the color of the coin and the surfaces I would vote it's a torch job!

I'm also in the PMD camp. Discoloration which may indicate heat. No indication that the remaining obv clad was "as struck" due to the raised metal, although it's possible for the cladding to be a clamshell and broken off after it left the mint (I don't believe that's the case here). Plus the assorted rim and edge dings.

Could be heat, but there is a lot of damage not associated with heat. could be both. whatever, the coin is a mess.

PMD. Possibly heated making the clad layer separate. I think the odd color on the reverse indicates heat.

Heat damaged---it may have been in a house fire or someone may have taken a torch to it.

"Messed with" - as mentioned, some type of heat applied. Could be somebody trying to make a homemade "Missing Clad Layer" error

    Spent it before it self-devaluates.

Post mint damage. Most likely torched or in a fire. When I was a kid my grandfather (from his grocery store) had a whole bunch of change burn in a fire. It pretty much looked like the image of the reverse you show.

Looks like PMD to me....Discoloration... clad edges look strangely smoothed. Cheers, RickO

My dad’s grocery store had a fire1958-59. Don’t remember how the money looked but fire does some strange things and I do remember the look of certain burnt objects 🤓

The coinage from the fire my grandparents had was clad. I think the fire was 1967. I remember washing the coins, so they could get them replaced. The bank would not take them dirty, but would take them darkened.
