Question about Great Collections auctions

Does a Great Collections auction end at the time shown on the listing, or does it get extended ad infinitum until 15 minutes (or some such amount of time) after the last bid is made?

They end when the published time arrives. Not extended because a new bid comes in.

As far as I know, only the old-fashioned “manual” sniping by the bidder himself/herself actually placing the bid in the last few seconds. I’m not aware of any “computer assisted” sniping programs that work with GC, like they do with eBay.

With eBay, I can place my max bid in a sniping program days ahead of time, and then days later as the auction clock is winding down, I can either be relaxing having dinner at a fine restaurant, or be fast asleep in bed, and still end up with the final high bid!

I always had fun with the manual snipe when I used to frequent ebay. Really enjoyed counting down with two screens, and placing my nuclear bid with four seconds to go.....Only lost one, and that was because my internet burped....Cheers, RickO

Four seconds was exactly the time remaining I always used for my manual snipes on eBay. I was successful probably ~80%-90% of the time. I missed on a couple, one of which I really wanted (not a coin), due to a burp in my system or theirs. Never have used an online snipe program.

Yes, GC and eBay work the same way, except for the sniping program capability.

Perhaps you misunderstood my point. With the auction ending at the specified time, if one bidder places a nuclear bid at the very end, another bidder may not have the opportunity to bid VERY high. With a "never-ending" format, the bids can much more easily go higher and higher and higher with time. Very few scenarios work better for the consignor with a finite ending auction, where an open ended auction often allows the consignor to get higher bids, as people have a few minutes to change their mind emotionally and then choose to bid higher.

I believe some are free, but the one I'm comfortable using charges something like 1.5% of the purchase price, minimum 30 cents or so, maximum $15 or so. To me, it's well worth it! Never had ANY hiccups!

Gixen mirror is like 6 bucks a year. A worthy alternative. I do probably thousands of snipes with it.

Agree, Gixen is a tremendous value, and the $6 a year for Mirror is well worth it and enables the owner to keep the site going.
