Seems like it's been slowed down already. Priority mail seems to be taking 4-5 days now compared to last month.
as long as it gets to where i sent it i'm not caring how long it takes to get there

I have a Priority Mail package sent last Monday that was supposed to arrive Thursday (5th) last week and is now stalled.
as soon as my package is one day late of the scheduled delevery, i call usps to do a case lookup on it, it gets it moving right away
And, they do not scan at every step now,
I just had a package that was delivered after 6 weeks in the system.
Are you saying they are going to slow it down even more?
There will be a hue and outcry, people like their mail on time.
The PMG must go.

This is one case where past mistakes on multiple fronts have caught up with the USPS. Not all of it their fault, either. Hopefully they’ll ride the changes out but I don’t expect much to overall change unless legislation is passed that favors the USPS. That wouldn’t happen without a lot of fighting from various lobbyists.
UPS has some type of shared mail delivery system that relies upon the US Post Office to make the final delivery. I ordered photos from Target.com and paid for the express delivery upgrade fee that assured me of delivery within 7 days. 10 + days later there was no delivery and through tracking I was advised I could expect my package in a further 10 days. Bizarre.
Unfortunately the photos didn't arrive in time for the State Fair Photo competition deadline so I had to go elsewhere to find a local photo printer. I have yet to see my Target order.
The past few months I have had really good luck with USPS. They have been really fast. I have had coins come across the country in just 2 days. I will say around Christmas time I thought I had a coin lost but it arrived after about 3 weeks of being shipped.

USPS is a failing buisness model, needs more than a new director or slow down of delivery times to fix.

My own position is that it should not be a "business", but (like it used to be) a service.
Getting a letter to anywhere in the US for a reasonable price is a service, and was designed to be just that when the PO was created.
Think of how things would change for the worse if the local police department had to be financially independent and support its own budget, for example. Less service and more tickets.
That might not be a bad idea. I hired in right after it became the USPS. It's right there in the name-United States Postal SERVICE. It was the United States Post Office Department prior to that, when it was supported by tax dollars. It would help the financially strapped agency if the Congress did away with the funding for retirees for 75 years in the future.
The USPS will deliver a letter to every last corner of this country and its territories for 55 cents. Anyone who can do that is not in business to make money, so they shouldn't be expected to.

USPS is the ONLY choice when all others won't go somewhere. That's how all the other delivery services make money.
They siphon the good stuff away from the USPS and will not deliver to money losing areas.
It's about time everyone realizes this.

And therein lies the rub. A first class letter to Guam or Point Barrow, AK should be five bucks, not fifty-five cents. But then again, why is anyone sending physical mail, outside of parcels and critical documents, in the year 2021?
The federal government subsidizes private airlines for Essential Air Service to provide air service to remote locations.
I believe they should do the same for the USPS to recognize the huge and costly commitment of delivering to every US address, no matter how remote.
Communications are changing dramatically with smartphones and computers. It would seem that the Postal Service would become strictly a package delivery service in the near future. Junk mail and letters will fade away. Just look at how the availability/sales of cards (holiday, birthday, anniversary etc.) in stores have diminished. People now send electronic cards. Cheers, RickO

Ever since I had an order of Peace Dollars take a week to arrive after paying $40 for “Overnight Priority Express” with guaranteed delivery by the next day I have avoided USPS like the plague.
One reason I buy from JMB so often is they allow me to pay $4.99 to upgrade to UPS 3 day select.
Private > Government always.
FedEx would do just as well.
On a head-to-head matchup that might be the case, but there is so much that the USPS does (must do) that has no practical private counterpart.

The person who is receiving the package might care. If I am the one receiving the package I don't care how long it takes to get here. But, if I am the sender I do want the package delivered in a timely manner. I got blamed for a few slow packages during the covid shutdowns. A lot of people are way to quick to get upset and push the panic button.
I once had a package coming from Canada take six months to get to me. Would you start caring if your package took that long to arrive?
Nope. Unless of vital importance. Nothing I can do about it. During the pandemic, It did take about 5 months for me to get an item from China, I was not concerned at all. By the time it got here it was too late to leave feedback thou.
They have to give the ponies a longer rest.

Well,,,, I still can't drive my letter to California for $0.55 so I guess I can't complain.
People don't give USPS credit for this. All the big shippers use USPS for the least profitable routes so they can profit on the more profitable urban areas. If you required FedEx to ship to every address in the country at a fixed price, they would get out of the shipping business.

Yes, but if you get a whole lot of letters at 55 cents each...
One of difficulties of treating the post office as a publicly subsidized service is questions of fairness. By far, the largest users of the Postal Service are private businesses. Should those benefit from subsidized mailing and shipping services?
Perhaps the most "fair" thing, different rates depending on the destination, would be decried as unfair as rates would vary considerably for different people.
Like most things in life, there isn't a simple solution.

I (almost) remember the days when the US Post Office was a monopoly. Aside from local delivery people, there were few or no competing national delivery services.
Also, if businesses are the largest users then you could argue that citizens are the biggest beneficiaries.

I don't think the USPS was designed or originally intended to be a profitable business. If it can succeed at that, then it's by good fortune and innovation. I don't understand how that became its primary objective.

I have had this Priority Mail package without a single scan since August 3rd. It says “in transit, arriving late” since then. Not sure what happened. It was last scanned in New Hampshire. I hope it gets moving soon. Usually when something is stalled it will give a new update with the same “in transit, arriving late” status but with a new date. The last date was August 6th. It has been frozen since.
File a locate mail request. They almost always find them and get them moving.

Just paid $8.10 to send a few coins 2 day priority on the east coast. Mailed monday, expected delivery thursday. 4 days for 2 day priority?

The post office does not offer two day priority service. Direct from the USPS website:
"In most cases, the expected delivery date printed on your receipt or provided at checkout will reflect a delivery time of 1, 2, or 3 business days and is based on origin, destination, and drop-off time."
That's actually 3-day delivery, which is fairly standard for Priority service to non-cosmopolitan areas.
Label heading is priority 2day, bought from usps site. Mute point since it's taking 4 days.

I don't doubt it. The USPS is a huge operation and there's no way everybody is on the same page there. Their rulebook is the Domestic Mail Manual, and this is what it says about priority mail:
2.1 Description of Service
Priority Mail is an expedited service and may contain any mailable matter weighing no more than 70 pounds except for APO and FPO mail subject to 703.2.0, 703.4.0, and Department of State mail subject to 703.3.0. Service objectives for delivery are 1 to 3 days; however, the USPS does not guarantee the delivery time.
1 to 3 days, not guaranteed is the bottom line.
