This quarter looks silver but is not.

As seen: no copper is evident. It weighs the same as the clad.
Brought into the shop by a young collector, today. ( might it be counterfeit or fake ? ). And why?

Possibly from a silver mint set and somehow made it in to circulation?
Wouldn't the weight be different from a clad example?
Don’t know.
5.67 grams clad vs 6.30 grams silver
The was no business strike silver issued according to Coinfacts.
This is probably one of those aftermarket platinum plated quarters. I bust all that stuff up and roll it up and carry to the bank weekly.
Suppose you could scratch between the reeds on the edge to see if it is plated.. or use a spectrograph...
It’s been plated
Does it ring like silver or clad?

Silver plate, no big deal
Why would anyone bother to plate quarters? I found one of these last week, 2005, I thought it was silver too, but now after weighing it I see it's just plated clad.
They used to sell five coin year sets. Silver, gold or platinum plated. With ads in magazines and papers, they caught a lot of fish.
I have a handful of them myself. Really tics me off when I'm CRH-ing for silver.
I have found three in change....I knew they were not silver, but sure looked like it at first. Cheers, RickO
Plated!
I think I even had a rhodium plated set. I think I've got two full sets of gold plated state quarters in cherry cases. I would have dumped them in a CoinStar but the gold plated ones get rejected.
I have found many clad quarters and they do trick you at first thinking you found silver. I stopped saving them and just "throw them back".
The gold plated are the more rare but I have found a couple. They look to cool to throw back!
any plated coin gets used as change by me as i see them they are just junk coins

Thanks all. I forgot about those aftermarket plated coins.
