1952 D/D Jefferson Nickel

jesbrokenjesbroken Posts: 10,182 ✭✭✭✭✭

I have this 1952 D Jefferson Nickel that appears to have the D doubled to the east quite a bit. These are the 3 RPM's VV lists and none are akin to mine. Is mine machine doubling?

    Hi Jim,
To me, sorry to say it looks to be damaged? I could be mistaken? ;)

I thought that at first, but then could see the bottom "D" in the center of the top D. If it was damage, I wouldn't think it would show like that. But still, don't really care as it's not worth a premium anyway. Just noted it when placing it in a holder going in the album.

If that is an RPM it's one of the widest and oddest I've ever seen. Kinda neat no matter what it is.

Sure looks goofy! Not an expert but I am going to say it is die deterioration.

But yet, there are very detailed end steps. Usually all the details suffer equally, get hammered/spread/flattened out on a deteriorating die. Can we see the coin?

I don't think that is an RPM. ;)

It could be die erosion, ejection damage, grease fill or a combination of all 3.

That is a very strange one.... I would like to hear @FredWeinberg input on this one. Cheers, RickO

Gotta wait to see if any more show up. It really is strange.

It's a far shot, but what if the mintmark was applied with the puncheon at an angle, then slipped and made the impression to the right?

While anything is possible, Pete, I would think more of the left "D" mark would have been destroyed with a slip, now with a punch, bounce, slip and punch, maybe. It is interesting and probably a simple answer, maybe from Fred. Hope he views this.

You may be right that it is just damage. Here are 4 more views of the MM.
    Thanks all,
