What would you grade these pennies?

I am curious on how grading works, so here’s a couple of pennies I have found and would like to know what you would grade them and why.

Is that a lamination error? The image on my monitor makes it look like a big divot...

The 86 would max out at MS65 due to the random marks and spots, however if submitted for grading it could very possibly receive a details grade due to the staple scratch on Lincoln's shoulder. The 74 tops out at MS62, lots and marks and spots and this also might detail grade for cleaned.

The lighting in the two pics look slightly different so I’m not sure the 74s is cleaned. The 86 has a lot of die polishing marks. Assuming the hair mark isn’t damage I agree with 62 on the 74s and maybe 64-65 on the 86.

    Waste of time.

Thanks guys, I assumed about the same with both. The mark in Lincoln’s hair on the 74s is gouge not delamination it’s just worn, if that helps. Also why do you say it might have been cleaned? This is how I found it, so what signs give you that impression?

Grading at higher levels is a huge challenge for most of us.

If you take some time you can probably get several various slabbed cents on Ebay for just a few dollars each. They would be a good reference set.

@JBK I plan on it, also hearing why it revived the grade someone gave it helps learn too. I don’t plan on having these graded, just they are the best examples in these years I have found searching rolls. And wondered what everyone here would grade them and why.

I would grade them as album worthy cents.

What kind of rolls have you been searching? My guess would be Fed rolls if that’s the best you’ve managed this far.
Not sure if it’s the lighting but the absence of luster or the ability to see it explains why they looked dipped or cleaned.

Try a brighter light and use a cell phone for the pic. This will hyper expose the luster if there is any.

Here are some examples of using light to help determine the amount of luster and eventual grade. This of course is only one aspect of the grading but a very important one.
The other factors besides luster are strike, preservation, and eye appeal which is a compilation of the first three.

Using a bright light and a cell phone at a slight angle will tell you a lot about the luster. As you can see the difference between MS 67 and MS 68.
The loose ones I pulled tonight, they would have a hard time even hitting 66 and for various reasons.

Here are a few more that are currently in for grading.

And you can see here how they stand out amongst the others.

    I hope this helps :-)

@CoinscratchFever thanks for the help, after retaking some photos I think I can see why they say the 74s was cleaned.

Ofcourse you know that for a coin to get a mint state rating it needs to be uncirculated. That’s why I went with AU 50’s. Just my thinking 😊. My associate just warned me to take cover as when I make a blanket statement we usually get corrected. Which is ok🤓

Wow, it looks like it was cleaned with a Brillo pad. Which now I can see in the original pics / these guys are good!

Your second picture really shows the cleaning on the '74S...Though it is there on the first picture, though subdued. Album cents, if you are doing a series.... Cheers, RickO
