Something didn't sound right

A couple of weeks ago I managed to pick up a box of halves at the bank. As I was going through them I could tell there was one that didn't sound right but it didn't sound like silver. I checked all the dates and nothing jumped out at me. I narrowed it down by sound and found a 1971 D half. The reverse had a seam around the rim much like how a magic coin with 2 heads is made so I could tell it was an alteration. At the time I thought it was a little strange that someone would go to the effort just to reinsert the tails side and it was heavy enough I could tell it wasn't hollow. I set it aside until tonight, it started talking to me, it was saying "open me"...."open me" and I was saying "what?!?" It was a tight fit and didn't want to open easy, a few little drops on the table got it to pop open. Look what I found inside! :)

    It's not easy to get apart and I would guess the trick starts with the Mexican coin and turns into the half. ;)

    I agree, much better than silver! :)
    I would have spotted silver right away, this was a fun hidden surprise.
    I think I have a new favorite coin for a few days.
    I may put it in a direct fit and carry it as a pocket piece to show people. :)

    I find these occasionally in my weekly bank boxes. You can spot them by the dull clanking sound when dropped. If you'll drop them into a plastic jug and shake it a couple times they usually pop right open with no damage.

    I don't search halfs but in a box of nickels once I found a two-tailed coin. It took me a few moments to figure out why I couldn't find the date. :p

    Why would someone hollow out a half dollar to store or hide a Mexican copper coin? It may have been a magician's coin but it's too difficult to open.

    I've seen exactly the same thing before - Kennedy half with Mexico copper coin inside.
    Probably a magician's coin, but could also be used for smuggling.

    What a cool find.... I have gone through many rolls of halves in years past, but never found anything like that... I should start roll searching again, half dollars. Not enough time or patience for the other coins. Cheers, RickO

    Are you saying if I handed you 15 half dollars and one of them was silver that you could not hear it with just a quick shake or rattle in your hand without looking at dates?

    This coin has a real dead/thud sound and has no ring to it at all. ;)
