Excellent post. This issue often surfaces here and elsewhere.... Used to see ebay listings for this 'valuable error coin with V instead of U'.... Thanks for the 'official' communique'....Cheers, RickO
Good information Mr. Boston.

Darn, all these years I thought my Peace dollars were the rare ones......
I thought that I read somewhere that it was during a "Romanesque" time of refection that it was used. I have been wrong before.

I would think that in the day a "V" was easier to make with a chisel and hammer.

The sound of the 'U' was written as 'V'. U is a new addition - the romans didn't have the letter U, just the V.
In Spanish, there was no V sound like we have, it was pronounced like a 'B'. So Venezuela is correctly pronounces Benezuela. Using the V sound is a modern occurence. Same with 'X' having a hard 'H' sound, which was the same sound as the letter 'J'. That's why sometimes you see Mexico and Texas spelled Mejico and Tejas.
Thanks for the info @thefinn

Thanks for this info! Hopefully it'll come in handy the next time I have someone at my table who insists the 'V' in 'TRVST' is a valuable mint error.
Just tell them, "When in Rome, do as the Romans".
Now, let's talk about the small letter 'O' on the Lincoln Memorial Cent and Franklin Half Dollar in "UNITED STATES oF AMERICA".
That "o" is a coded message from the illuminatti representing the All-Seeing Eye of Providence.
What's up with those enigmatic letters on the backs of those 1909 pennies?
Don't bother with all that "V" before "U" jazz from ancient history. Tell them Ah-nold thinks VDB's (or perhaps Baron von Frankenstein's) first name is pronounced "Wictor". Or was that Marty Feldman?
This is known as deflection. Your stated option, while righteous and worthwhile for its intellectual rigor, seems likely to produce one of those "no good deed goes unpunished" scenarios.

Something learned, way cool
Glad to have learned that, I was under the impression that the V was a subtle symbolization of a WWI victory.
I get numerous calls in the store from people telling me they have the rare peace dollar with the V instead of the U.
Now, I can give them more accurate reasoning
Interesting, thanks for the information.
