Black Mercury dime

Before and after acetone. This is the darkest coin I have ever seen the obv was pitch black.

I used to have a 'black beauty' 1916 (Philly) Merc Dime in an ICG holder. Don't recall the grade but it was high AU or UNC. Had a captivating look.

@savoyspecial it is still really dark on the obv when not under bright light. Looks much nicer now thou.

Terminal toning in the first image? I remember giving my parents a 25th Anniversary Silver ingot and having it framed with card I gave them and it turned black quickly based upon the material it was framed with.

Wow... That was a dark one..... Interesting that acetone made it a tad lighter though. Very good year ;) Cheers, RickO

I like my Mercuries white. But if I had one black like that, I think I would add it to my set as an auxiliary specimen (not as the '42) that demonstrates an extremely toned Mercury.

My strategy is about collecting what I intend to keep, not investing in what I plan to sell.

There are millions and millions of white ones. It's cool to have a black one.

I think I like the before.

I came across a gorgeous raw purple/black mercury at a local auction once. The luster was fantastic, 66 easily with a shot at 67. I bid it up to PCGS MS66 value, which was only like $80, before I threw in the towel. Someone wanted it more than I did. I like to tell myself it had some unseen wheel mark or cleaning that would have detailed it anyways. :D
