“Picasso” Peso Pushes USPI Proof Prices

RegistryCoinRegistryCoin Posts: 5,117 ✭✭✭✭

The 1903 USPI seven piece proof set offered by Heritage established price records tonight with the beautifully toned 1903 proof peso leading the way.
The lovely 50 centavos and striking one and 1/2 centavo coins added to the set’s attraction.
The set sold for $34,000.00 ($40,800.00 w/Buyer's Premium),

It was a World record price for a first year of issue United States Philippine proof set. Congratulations to the winning bidder and all the bidders who astutely saw the potential of this set. Around the turn of the 20th Century, the US Mint only produced these proof sets for (5) total years and 3/5 of the years saw mintages about 1/5 the size of the 1903 first year mintage. So, it would not surprise me at all to see high quality 7 pc. Proof sets break the $100,000 mark sometime in the near future.

As the Justhavingfun vast USPI collection sales wind down - they started way back when at Teletrade, then moved over to Stacks for a few years and finally went over to Heritage (the “Mahal collection”) - these coins become harder and harder to obtain as they are impounded in very strong registry set hands (both at PCGS and NGC). Not to mention they are beautiful coins!

edited to add - Justin’s Price Guide (www.monstercoinmart.com) for USPI Proof Pesos has already been updated in light of recent trends and the Heritage auction last night. Talk about working to try to maintain up to the minute accurate pricing information for this series! Good job Justin!

I know enough about these to fill a thimble. I have no idea of values. I barely broke even on an NGC PR66CAM CAC 1883 Hawaiian eighth-dala. Call me an highly-sophisticated dilettante. I have nothing substantive to add to this conversation.

The set kicks royal f@@king ass B)

Agreed. Beautiful toning aside, it is amazing these high grade specimens survived in pristine condition.
This series includes proof coins from only five years, 1903, 1904, 1905, 1906 and 1908.
    The mintages were very small.
The 1903 had the largest mintage.
    1903 mintage 2,558,
    1904 mintage 1,355,
    1905 mintage 471,
    1906 mintage 500,
    1908 mintage 500.
Will we see beautifully toned, high grade seven-coin proof sets from the later years?
The mintages suggest it may be extremely difficult to put together complete sets.
PCGS pops suggest sets like the one sold at Heritage, with a PR67+ peso, are very rare.
    From 1903, there are only (4) PR67+ and (1) PR68.
    From 1904, (2) PR67+, (2) PR68, and (1) PR68+.
    From 1905, (3) PR67+, (1) PR68.
    From 1906, (3) PR67+, (5) PR68, and (1) PR68+.
    From 1908, (1) PR67+ and (5) PR68.

I don't believe I could phrase a response to this set better than our esteemed @ColonelJessup just did. Amazing freakin' group!

I believe that in the past nearly 5 years, we have only seen this new 67+ Coin (pop 3 go to 4) for 1903, I believe 1 addition MS68 for 1904, not a single new 67+ or 68 for 1905, the pop up 1 MS68 and another MS68 becoming the MS68+ coin for 1906 and the pop up 1 MS68 for 1908 which might have been an upgrade from a PR67+ coin. Only a total of (5) undergrade or finest known proof pesos “coming out of the woodwork” or upgraded in the past five years across the entire series! That’s how “strict” PCGS has been on “it’s line” for this series. And, that (generally) translates into much higher prices as we witnessed last night!

Anyone know where this set came from?

    Just my 2 cents.

P.S. Talk about a PR67 without literally a mark on it - look at the 50C! And the strike - I just love counting toes! 😆 I won’t say too much about the full breast, but rest assured Justhavingfun would have been talking all about it! The reverse designed by Charles Barber and the coin engraved by Barber - some of his best work!

“Anyone know where this set came from?”

It is surprising these coins were not in the Justhavingfun collection.
So few high grade USPI coins escaped him.

My guess: A sharp USPI collector across the street sent the set over. (The coins are consecutively numbered.)

“It is surprising these coins were not in the Justhavingfun collection.”

Yes. He “only” owned 3/4 of the PR67+ coins and the one PR68! 😂

That’s the most common proof year though. I bought a pf62 1903 peso for 600 dollars

lowest grade proofs, even down to PR61 are trading these days between $800-$1,200 for this date. Good luck trying to double your money!
