Super large curved clip High grade and with date

gumby1234gumby1234 Posts: 5,769 ✭✭✭✭✭

This is my favorite error coin that I own. Largest clip on a coin with a date that I have ever seen. Possibly the largest curved clip coin ever.

@TurtleCat On the rev on the clipped edge that is copper. Also bad pics. I notoriously take bad pics.

Very nice clip … but not the largest ever. I have a couple of dated crescent clips that are definitely larger.

And I’m not hating on your coin, but that PVC has to go! Please send it back to our host for conservation and re-entombment asap.

Yeah, I figured you or someone else would ask. I’m on a business trip until Friday. I’ll dig them out and post pics when I get back. One is a 1964 Lincoln I bought from Rich Schemmer many years ago and the other is a 1967 (I think) quarter I purchased raw off of eBay — both now slabbed.

    pretty neat!

....you might be thinking of elliptical clips -

Pretty cool! I agree with getting the PVC removed. You'll get a nice, fresh slab out if it, too.

Nice one - wonder how that made it out of the Mint

    Cool clip!

Hopefully the pvc can removed and hasn't eaten into the surface of the coin.

    MS67 & PVC.
I'd add its a bit off center too @ K5.

Collecting error coinage is fun hobby.

74% missing makes it a Crescent Clip.
It is more desirable version than the typical & heavier Curve Clip examples.

1999 was a productive year for errors making it out of the Philly Mint

    Nice find !

One of the decomposition products of the PVC plasticizer residue is hydrochloric acid! The HCl is eating away the surface of your coin. It will continue to damage the coin until it's removed. Please consider the advice of others and have it conserved.

How can I get it conserved and slabbed again if I am not a member of PCGS? Any ideas.

Go thru a Coin dealer/Coin shop that is a PCGS member? Or maybe someone on this forum can help out. I know I had to go through a CAC member when I wanted to submit a few coins.

Nice error coin... However, I will add support to the 'remove the PVC' suggestion. It will continue to damage the coin if not addressed. Cheers, RickO

I had to dig up this thread from page 3, but as promised here are my two gemmy crescent clips — enjoy! 😁

@EXOJUNKIE nice clips. The cent looks to be slightly larger clip than my dime. It does not qualify as having the date thou. Definitely very nice coins you have thou.

The last digit of the date (and mint mark on the cent) is visible on each of the coins, so although not a full four-digit date, they are positively identified.

By weight the quarter is 74% clipped (same as your dime) and the cent is 76% clipped. Presumably, PCGS weighed your dime to figure out the clip percentage.

@EXOJUNKIE wow I was right that the penny was slightly larger clip. They ate nice and yes they go by weight because the metal flows into the missing portion.

How do they know the difference between a 1964D and a 1974D ?

@MsMorrisine The same can be asked of the quarter. How do they know if its a 1967 or a 1977?
