My first 19th century proof silver !!!

I just picked up this awesome proof quarter at the Manchester coin expo, it is so beautiful 🤩. I just cannot stop looking at it. It looks cameo to me and under the light it is blindingly reglective. I also got a really nice proof shield nickel that just looks awesome. I absolutely love 19th century proof coins 👍👍👍

That seated proof is really nice. I have to get my self one some day. Something about old proofs especially silver ones that just grab my attention.

Yea they are really cool, it was very expensive though, I chose to sell some of my valuable coins for it because I have a sweet tooth for proofs.

The coin does have nice contrast and it’s pretty frosty, although with a number of hairlines in line with the grade. Also, I’m going to try one more time here. The word is “very”. You keep spelling it “vary”.

I hear it’s actually quite common to see hairlines on proof coins from the 19th century especially because of the delicate surface and the fact that back then in the 19th century people physically handled the coins and likely wrapped there coins in cloth which likely caused some hairlines.
The Coin looks 1000% better in person than my pictures 👍👍👍
Also my bad on the “very” I fixed the typo. I have dyslexia so I appreciate when I get help on spelling, thank you 😊

Exactly!! Normal wear and tear for a historical piece. That coin is gorgeous!

This is my one and only 19th century proof. I got it to complete my 2c set as it's less expensive as a proof than a business strike.

There are exceptions but when you’re buying and selling and then buying the dealers, auction houses, and TPG’s benefit the most.

Beautiful proof coins... That quarter is really nice. Part of the attraction of the old proofs, is that they have survived so long in that condition. Cheers, RickO

Very nice- and with CAC no less! I also prefer proofs except in the issues where none exist (pre-1818-ish).

Nice looking quarter. Sometimes those hairlines are actually die polish lines. I also just picked up my first 19th century proof silver this year. Congrats on the new addition.

All my graded small denominations are proofs. If it’s small I got to try to get the denomination in proof. They are just awesome to have 👍

Edit: yep, just checked my set and see I have a PF64 1880, but mine has toning.

Aren't 19th century proof coins amazing?

I mean, seriously, the coin is nearly 140-years old and has what amounts to no more than trivial hairlines across its surfaces, which allows one to see the true depth of the original die work and the details put in by the engraver. I recall buying similar coins back in the 1980s or early 1990s and just being mesmerized by the flash and mirrors and overall quality of how they were produced. Additionally, since these were made in significant numbers (600-800 pieces or so at time of issue) and so few folks collect them by date, they are priced at very attractive levels as type coins.

This is a great niche.

Ow cool, I always heard most of the hairlines where the result of 19th century storage and handling since back then people likely wrapped the coins in cloth to preserve them.
