what would cause this on V Nickel

jdimmickjdimmick Posts: 10,001 ✭✭✭✭✭

I found this in a bag of V Nickle's while back. Its kind of rough, but what would cause the design elements (date punch, stars etc) that are normally raised on a coin above the fields, to be inset kind of like incuse indians. is it just rust or something else going on here?

Looks oxidized to me. I'm not sure why you say it is incuse. Is it actually recessed?

If the dates/stars are actually incuse, then it is a fake coin.... Check them with a toothpick and let us know. Cheers, RickO

Well the nickel/copper alloy won't rust so that isn't it. Maybe some type of acid exposure? Can you get a weight on it? If acid then it will be considerably lighter than the 5 grams norm.

Acid came into contact with high points only? Interesting.

It could be done if anyone wanted, quite easily. But it looks far more like corrosion. I don't really see the incuse features the OP mentions.

I've seen similar contemporary counterfeits. I think I might have one made of lead.

    They aren't usually incuse, though.

Does Nic-O-date make the date on a dateless Buffalo look like that? I haven’t seen one myself. But, if it does then maybe someone Nic-O-dated the whole coin so they could see the details better or something like that.

I have seen this phenomenon on various genuine coins. This is what I presume happened:

The coin got covered with some sort of substance that more or less protected the surface.
The coin continued to circulate for a while and the substance wore off the high points.
The coin ended up in the ground in rather acidic soil. The acidic soil attacked the bare metal of the high points, eating down into the coin in the shape of the exposed metal.
The coin got dug up and put back into circulation where considerable wear exposed the fields around the corroded areas.

Now, this is just a guess as you could probably simulate the effect with some lacquer and a bit of acid, but the bottom line is that there are ways how this letter-shaped incusation can occur naturally.

the high points are recessed, obv and rev.

if you look at the light source at k2, then look at the stars at k8, you can see the light on the bottom side where the shadow side should be.
