US Mint continuing their tradition of making ugly coins?

Looks like these could be a couple designs for the American women’s quarters program of next year. Ugly designs with ugly women on them. Not only that, but no one knows who these people are and no one cares.

    They sure are!

Looks shouldn't be the basis for inclusion on our coins. If that were the case, George Washington would've never made the cut back in 1932, due to the many dental woes he endured through much of his life.

They need to get rid of him too. He’s been ruining our coins for almost 100 years now

"Mustang" Ride, Sally Ride and "Still I Rise". Two recent women that are icons.
I agree with @jmlanzaf , either go back to school or learn about these women.

Younger people may not know who they are, but they can google them and find out. They certainly ain't ugly. If you are looking for Marilyn Monroe, Debbie Reynolds, Vivien Leigh, Audrey Hepburn and the like, they may come later in the TV actresses series, who knows what is next for US coinage?
I need to see the actual coins before I decide.

As for the US mint "Tradition of minting ugly coins", The only one I can think of is the Eunice Schriver commemorative. SBA dollars may be considered ugly by some.

Why can’t we go back to the artistic renaissance style of the early 20th century. These days our coinage is monotonous and has a bunch of dead people on them.

A lot of those designs were also seen a monotonous or stale as well at the time.

I just ordered 2 rolls of these to use for tipping.
They had a couple of other designs I thought were better.
Glad I'm not a collecting the series or it would be a bigger disappointment.

Coins are for commerce. You won't have to worry about designs once we go digital.

With the exception of the Sac and Innovation dollar I'm no fan of the current designs on US coinage either. Everything else is old and tired in my opinion. Maybe a return to Liberty in some form would be appropriate. But I'd say many of the commemoratives are just fine.

It was also a different sentimentality associated with the age. For better or worse it’s emblematic of the culture. The culture now is different and the symbols, mascots, and themes on coinage today reflect the current culture and not the one of a bygone era.

If you look at the coins and currency of the nations over the last 50 years you’d see that this trend has been there for a long time and we as a nation are simply catching up.

The "ugly women" comment is grotesque in its sexism. Speaking about these important women in such a vile way shows a lack of respect for them AND a lack of respect for the United States. These kinds of comments belong in a different place; would you say such a thing to your mother?

I wonder if collectors got together 200 years ago and asked each other how could coins ever get uglier than last years design?

The women are certainly worthy of commemoration. I don’t think it should be done on the quarter, and the execution of the intended design might not be to my liking, but that’s another thing entirely.

Panda is entitled to his opinion, but don’t expect too many to share the viewpoint.

    In answer to the question:

No. The Mint has some beautiful stuff currently available and to be introduced. Is there room for improvement on some designs and craftmanship? Of course, and you can say that for almost every manufacturing entity where design is a criteria of product execution.

Take the high end mass produced luxury car manufacturers. Without naming names they almost all have lumpy over styled models, slap the badge on and hope for acceptance based on reputation.

With the recent marketing changes and the Morgan and Peace tribute coins I think the Mint is trending positive on design and execution.

Too bad Rosalind Franklin and Marie Curie weren't American. They'd get put on quarters and Panda would be wondering who they were, too. Guess they don't have Google wherever he is.

I think there should be a series "Women heroes of WWII" no matter what country they are from. A lot of them were from Russia.
    Who today ever heard of:
Nancy Wake (The White Mouse) (Born in New Zealand)
Mariya Oktyabrskaya - This woman got so angry when her husband was killed that she bought her own tank and named it "The Fighting Girlfriend"! How impressive is that!
Yevdokiya Zavaliy - The Germans feared this woman so much that they called her "Frau Black Death"
Roza Shanina - She was also referred to as the Unseen Terror of East Prussia
Call them international heroes. You can google the names if you want to read their stories. Anyone who served in WWII for the allied forces is an international hero to me.
Mother Teresa - (While not a world war II hero-You certainly heard of her) Dedicated her whole life to helping the poorest of the poor and is well respected everywhere.

All these woman and many more need to commemorated.

I much prefer the commemoration of notable women to some of the crass commercialization we endured on SHQ's. The women posted thus far are certainly exceptional in their areas of endeavor. Should be an interesting run of coins, and one I will watch, with probably a few acquisitions. Cheers RickO
