I'll buy coins that way, but many won't, and unless someone is planning to hold the coin long-term, they're very likely to factor in that they will have more difficulty selling the coin in an ICG holder than if it were graded by PCGS or NGC, and they will adjust their price accordingly.

Nice coin. I think you can get the money for the coin in or out of the icg holder.

The phrase "you get what you pay for" comes to mind. PCGS and NGC cost more and take more time, but people use them so often because the market dictates it. Coins will sell in other holders, but by and large, not as well as they will in a PCGS or NGC holder. I handle an occasional ANACS holder, but I can't think of the last time I had an ICG holder come my way.

The last coin I purchased in an ICG holder was a straight graded AU55 Seated Dime and I was the only bidder at ~60% of PCGS price guide valuation. I thought the coin had likely been dipped at some point, but looked like it was starting to retone nicely. I was going to put in into my Dansco album anyway, so the plastic didn't really matter to me.

If this had been a piece for my "Box of 20", I'd have passed... because, yes... for higher end pieces (and an '89CC Morgan qualifies) the plastic does matter. ..and all of my future "box-o-twenny" will similarly be entombed... FWIW, I think the piece in the OP would have a good chance of crossing...

It's a nice coin. I agree with those that indicate that it's value is impacted due to being in an ICG holder. This is a type of coin that I would want with a CAC sticker to maximize value. However, it doesn't sound like that is your goal so just enjoy it!

The difference is there’s a much larger market for straight-grade coins, and that market can demand more respected grading companies. As for your coin specifically, I would think it’s original, but I’d also say it’s light enough that a coin with that color could be wiped and retoned.

I had the same thoughts seeing the coin. Prefaced with its hard to judge a coin from a photo, I thought the coin seemed too light in color. Definitely dipped with the darker color around the devices. I have nothing against dipping but prefer it is done on AU and above when there is still luster present. Dipping a VF and lower grade makes the coin look too white IMHO.
Surface wear is a definite VF30 and I think the OP got a nice coin for the price paid. But is it 60% off retail, not sure about that. Auction prices for a VF30 were from $1,200 to $2,000 based on the eye appeal, and maybe the opportunity for an upgrade, and that's with coins from the big 2. You are happy with the coin, paid a good price for it, and that's what matters. Enjoy.

I wanted someone to mention it.

I was beginning to think l was definitely wrong. But that gut feeling is there.

The patina is so uniform that I think it was once cleaned.

To be fair (and as @MFeld noted) even if it's been cleaned, I think it looks similar to many coins in PCGS/NGC holders and could be graded. The difference is that many buyers won't ask questions when the coin is in a PCGS or NGC slab (even if they should), but they will ask questions when it's in a different holder. And those questions cost money.
