Slab Nicknames

MWallaceMWallace Posts: 4,631 ✭✭✭✭✭

@USSID17 and I were talking the other day. Which slab is nicknamed "Soap Bar"?

While on the subject, what are other slab nicknames and show a picture of one? I can think of several but I'll start with this one.

Doily.

Thx for this thread. I hear various nicknames and I am not always sure what some of them mean.

First generation PCGS slabs are called rattlers since the coins frequently are loose inside them and rattle.

The early NGC slabs also called "no line fatties".

My instinct tells me that the "soap bar" is the PCGS Regency holder as it reminds me of a bar of Irish Spring. Is this correct?

I just refer to them all as slabs, often with the TPG initials preceding the word. I have never had an interest in the types/generations, just the coin. Cheers, RickO

I’ve heard ‘Soap Bar’ and ‘Soap Box’ used for the old small white ANACS slabs, and for what we all know as NGC Fatties.

True, but it is clearly a precursor to PCGS, founded by David Hall (hence the term "prehistoric" :D

@Lazybones Condor101 has said that First Token was not an authorized ACG licensee. So those have to be slabbed by a licensee as a 2nd label. No clue AFAIK as to who actually did them.

As I understand it, ACG sued First Token for using their slabs. This is partially why FTGS was gone inside a year.

I don't see any signs of such a suit in PACER. No cases with FirstToken or First Token, etc. Probably never got past a nasty letter from a lawyer.

i googled soap bar and ngc. that yielded some interesting results. a rare combination. numismatics and soap. also some women i've encountered recently. since when did it fall out of vogue to enjoy low-cost, clean water in the first world in the form of bathing?

anywhoo, i tried to find the green insert but all the images were samples, so i went with this. soap bar covers a few generations.
