1922 toned peace dollar. Is it a good buy or is it goodbye

RubiconRubicon Posts: 201 ✭✭✭

Bought this peace dollar in an internet auction with strong bidding. I am new to collecting peace dollars. Is this a premium 64 or did I badly overpay.

    Paid $145

You probably could have bought 2 64s for that money had you shopped around. Or paid 30-40 for a raw 64.

MS66 taste on an MS63 budget.

Thanks for the links but I can’t say from these photos that I would like the quality of the eBay coins. I bought this coin mainly for the pretty gold toning and nice surfaces.
Btw are peace dollars usually softly struck on the reverse lettering?

Just FYI - the dark marks and small hits on liberty’s cheek bring the coins eye appeal down. The cheek is the focal point of the obverse. The cleaner the cheek the more photogenic the coin is for Peace and Morgan’s.

Coin In hand the marks on the cheek are fairly small. I see 64 coins on line that have large chatter on cheek and fields both. The coin isn’t a 65+ or 66 to have such a clean cheek.
Maybe I am wrong haven’t experience with Peace dollars

As long as you are happy that is all that matters. :)
    It's a nice one!

Thanks. Only thing not happy with is soft lettering strike on reverse. Is this very common on peace dollars?

  • airplanenutairplanenut Posts: 22,389 ✭✭✭✭✭

Gold toning is common on peace dollars and doesn’t carry a premium. From the photos, the coin doesn’t look like anything beyond a regular example of a common coin. It’s not one for which I’d pay a premium.

"Only thing not happy with is soft lettering strike on reverse. Is this very common on peace dollars?"

The lettering on the reverse is not a very high relief and is prone to grease fill & die wear.
So the answer to your question would be yes, it is fairly common. ;)

    Edited to add:
The dies were clashed and polished that produced your coin.
This could also make the lettering a little more shallow on the die.
It looks like your coin may be a Vam 2BU that shows a spike on the eagles shoulder from the die clash.

Thanks for everyone’s feedback. Think I got caught up in the bidding although coin looks nice for grade. I might trade it for a nice 65 as 64 dollars have too many marks for my taste as it is a large coin

The more common a coin is, the less reason there is to stretch when pursuing one. Yours looks like a nice example for the grade, but not one that merited such a premium.

If you are happy, then overpaying is not an issue. Not a coin I would buy, however, that is a matter of personal taste. Cheers, RickO

It's nice enough, but with a little looking you could have paid less for a better coin. 1922 Peace dollars in MS64 are the opposite of rare.

I am not seeing the gold toning you mention....could be that your photo white-balance is off. Looks like a solid 64.

When you look at the coin it looks solid gold just like a gold coin. Reposting so you can see for yourself. I thought maybe toning wasn’t real.

    Good Buy!

You were probably bidding against a Vam specialist.

Not an expert in Peace Dollar VAM's, but If it is a 2BU then you are R5 on the rarity scale.

Anything R5 and with worthwhile eye appeal is a solid purchase.

Your audience wont be the average collector on CU but the VAM fraternity.

VamWorld is a great resource and their forum could probably help you a great deal.

This is what I do. Every NGC graded slab you can look up their value based off NGCs web site. I do not have the link just plug the Cert number in along with the grade number and press enter just go to NGC it’s there. But I will try and post it shortly for U. I did yours it’s worth according to NGC $60.00

I never buy a NGC slab without doing this. Here is the link along with a picture of your coins value. I will let you decide if next time you pay more than you should.

Now that I got the link up you can use it any time you want. I think I did something similar but now I always check. It really helped a few weeks ago using this coin look up!

Go to VamWorld.com and look up the Peace Dollar.

    All the VAM's are listed.

Look at the images and try to match the pick up points.

They have a forum as well, with an even deeper knowledge in this specialty.

Does it mean anything that the coin is all gold colored. Looks almost fake. Just gold all over coin. Would think it’s a gold coin not peace dollar. Doesn’t even seem like regular toning. No silver at all showing through

Not as deep as a gold coin but nothing like a white silver peace dollar. Coloration strong yellow even gold. . Coin has strange look like it was minted in this color. Don’t get it. Hope it’s not artificial tone

How deep do you want to dive into VAM's?

If not at all then don't sweat it... cool VAM with color.

Otherwise make this your pet VAM and hunt them exclusively while your knowledge grows.
