A number of large cent restrikes have been attributed to Joseph Jacob Mickley, "The Father of American Numismatics", but there is also some debate as to whether there's any evidence for this from QDB.

Here's some general information below.

1823 Large Cent - Silver Restrike - PCGS - Ex. Charles J. Dupont, R.E. "Ted" Naftzger, Jr., D. Brent Pogue

I've aways been fascinated by these coins.

I've always attributed these to Joseph Jacob Mickley but recently, this has ben put into doubt by QDB! Mickley is known as the Father of American Numismatics.

So, did Mickley create or not create the 1823 silver restrike cents?

Q. David Bowers suggests that there is not a shred of evidence linking the evidence of these to famous Philadelphia numismatist Mickley. They seem to have been issued by someone in or around Philadelphia, whose identity is unknown today. Such are the interesting mysteries of restrikes.

The 1823 restrike cents were produced in the latter half of the 19th century, first at the request of prominent collector Joseph J. Mickley who owned the dies, and most likely no earlier than 1862.

It sounds more like John Haseltine did? Very cool though, with a lot of interesting history behind it. Look at the early dealers involved, and the provenance of owners.

I have never actually seen one of these... in all the years of coin shows in the PNW and other western states... Would like to actually see one in hand. Cheers, RickO

Ditto to what Ricko said. And I've seen a lot of coins.

Any 1823 large cent above XF is pretty scarce. This coin is a true rarity. Even though not “mint issued”, there will always be a market for it.
