Antique Dealer Advert in WSJ for PR63 1884 Trade Dollar
Saw this in yesterday's Wall Street Journal and surprised me since one doesn't typically see something like this advertised a business focused newspaper!

M.S. Rau recently added a numismatics section, headed by Bruce Smith. They have some pretty interesting pieces already: https://rauantiques.com/collections/numismatics?

Thanks for the link. I’m not a currency collector, but they have some gorgeous crisp notes to my eye.

They have had various exceptional antiques that, for years, they have advertised regularly via quarter-page ads in the first few pages of the New York Times.
Note the ad doesn't say who graded it Proof-63.
I think it is this one:

That’s cool. Any widespread ‘paper’ ad for coins these days is a rarity.
It's from the days of ole' when you used to argue the grades and call everything an AU and then the dealer gets to hollar I'll buy from you for that price!
Nothing like that goes on any longer.............
They are one of my favorite places to visit when in NOLA - simply amazing stuff, at eye-popping prices.
I should have said "note the ad makes no mention or suggestion whatsoever that TPGs exist"
I wandered through their shop when I was there a couple years ago. Amazing stuff, indeed.

I used to get the WSJ before I retired... Do not recall coin ads in there before... Of course, I did not read every page even then, so could have missed them. Cheers, RickO

Interesting. I have visited them in NO. Their coins are nice but optimistically priced, IMO.
is the ask price on heritage "optimistic" ?
It's not how I'd sell an 1884 TD, but more power to them if their business model works. Looks like they are attempting to divert recent stock market gains into numismatics - might actually be a good thing.
I used to visit M.S. Rau when I visited New Orleans. They had many beautiful antiques with beyond astronomic prices. Honestly don't know how they are still in business.

It's a fun place to walk through. They do have high quality items. You're right. The prices are out of control. I always wonder if they profit off the uneducated or if the sale prices are always much lower.

I've never been there and have no idea of how there pricing structure is. But it sounds to me from the comments here they only handle unique or nearly unique items. They probably have a good idea of what they can buy and name their price on and it will eventually find that white whale.
I know when my better half wants something, price be damned if there is enough in the budget to buy it!
