Charles I Shilling found at St. Mary's Fort in Maryland

From the Washington Post, May 2, 2021

A silver English shilling found during a dig in St. Mary’s, Md., is more proof that archaeologists have pinpointed the correct location of an old fort. (Historic St. Mary's City)

It was an elegant coin, showing the crowned king in profile with goatee and lace collar. It was probably missed by its owner, and probably searched for, in vain.

The coin has a Portcullis mint mark at the top of both sides which looks like this:

The story also made the news in England.

That spot is a few miles from my house. Ever since they found the spot, they put up security cameras and the like. I pass the dig site every day on my way to work. I have been wanting to stop in and talk to the folks but security looks tight.

I need to start swinging my detector in the 250 wooded acres behind my house!

What a great - and exciting - find. Areas rich in history always have the possibility of such a find. I live in such an area, but so far have not found any really old artifacts. Some old coins have been found around here...but not as old as the one in the OP.... Though this area was settled in the late 1600's. Cheers, RickO
