I agree. I have dealt with fire, as years ago I lost a farm shop to fire. The clean up was not enjoyable and all my antiques and projects were lost. The one thing observable with all material cleaned up was that all metal was warped. The dime shows no heat damage. On tube I watched about a nickel being black and it had to do with the heating of the metal excessively before stamping the coin.
I have a penny environmentally damaged. The surface of the penny is not uniform in its deterioration. This dime does not fit that scenario. I need to send the dime off and get it examined by professionals. Now I hear that it will be a very long wait as the grading companies are overwhelmed. What recommendations do you guys have?
A coin that's improperly annealed will have an edge that looks like a normal coin. The surfaces and edge will appear similar on environmentally damaged coins. Post a pic of the edge and save yourself some $$.

Everyone is guessing about the coin being black . I have a 50 cent totally black.
so, is there a metal or chemist specialist expert amongst the members who can explain and does know the reason?

I also had a black 80% silver quarter. I dipped it and watched the black go away...several dips later it is nearly a MS coin. so, what is it?

Your dime is environmental damage as mentioned.
Your penny is post mint damage caused by a wire wheel.
Here is an example of a quarter with the same texture.

I decided to try out the wire wheel theory on a next to new 1964 Denver mint penny. It appears that the damage done is not the same as the penny in my previous post. Any thoughts?

There are many variables.
Speed of rotation, how stiff the wire is & how much pressure you apply will change the texture.
It looks like you used too much pressure and moved the metal more than the other examples.
Yours has waves rather than dots.
We get several coins like this posted per year, that is why I wire wheeled the quarter as an example.
If you notice on the quarter the dimpled look shows well in front of George's face.
A softer wire wheel on maybe a Dremel should get closer to the dotted pattern.
I just did this one with a Dremel to show more of a dotted pattern.

with the loss of diameter and thickness, I'd say it was acid treated.
As you guys have already deducted, I'm not a real coin collector. I've saved coins over the years that I thought were of interest. I have two other coins of interest. One is a 1964 penny with two Rim Clips. The other is the quarter I just posted. What do you guys know about this quarter? Has it any value? Thanks.

The cent has had damage from a wire wheel..., the quarter is damaged from a rolling machine - both are PMD. Do you have pictures of the cent with rim clips? Cheers, RickO
Here is the penny with the clips. Also, I found a 1981 dime with a 'D' mint mark that looks like a 'P'. Any comments?!
The 1964 cent is a nice double clip.
The 1981 dime looks like a P mint mark and I'm not sure why you think it may have been a D at some point.
I must apologize. I have a pile of dimes and one with a P mint mark. The joke is on me.
