Carbon spots are very common on nickels, ive had then show up on aa nice 36 buffalo after grading. And I do agree thzt spot is a killer for me . 65 and no FS the hit on the left goes thru the steps ,imho if given an fs that was just that a gift.
As a nickel collector I would advise the YN to be more selective on dates that are plentiful and has no hits or spots.
I would prefer a raw 65 fs coin over a graded coin with eye appeal issues.

I have about 15 of these (1971-D) FS Jefferson nickels. These came well struck with FS for the most part. I do not know if it is worth grading this date even though FS. I think you may need at least a 68 to make out. A DD is another story. I did not know one existed. Now I have to find them and check them for DD's.
I think the spot killed the grade in this case. I'd have been at 65FS without it. The group of coins you have is decent, but I wouldn't have invested money in grading them. If you're looking at this as a learning experience, that's fine.

Edit: not a DDO on the 71-D.
I didn't pay anything to get these coins... nor did I get them graded myself... that would be the help of a fellow CU member
I paid the tuition already so now you won’t have to. Make sure you use it for comparison before you pay

Don't know if spot hurts grade.
Better details in hair vs other coin. Hit on cheek. Much cleaner reverse.

Wouldn't this have to grade MS67 to be worth encapsulation?
