I'm not sure about the Steel Age, but humans have been working with steel since at least 1800 BC.

It can be very complicated, though.
And those early copper nickel coins (3CN, shield nickel) with harder metal were challenging for the dies!1 -
@UrbanDecay04 I also have read that the dies were expensive in the day of early American coinage so even though the die was cracked or it had last year's date on it (where they would stamp over last year's date), it would still be used.
