Take your time. It takes practice.

You need to post a photo, obverse and reverse of entire coin. Also, I would suggest not posting a question and then making another post with ???? 1 minute later. (Especially with no photo). iMO

This coin has spent some time underground and as such is worth exactly 5 cents.

Give him a break, it's only his second post. He's new here!

You’re correct I was trying to be helpful but I guess it could come across as not.
    @Changeling i apologize.

Take the fees you would spend on grading and buy slabbed (already graded) coins from eBay.

Use those as a type of grading set and guide.

You can find perfectly problem free mint state graded coins for a fraction of the grading costs... ie... benefits from other peoples crushed dreams (mistakes)

Welcome to the forum & coin collecting! :)

Environmental damage and not worth grading.

Thank you for the input everyone. Again I'm very new to the coin collecting and in my mind I thought that it was missing clad layers and that's why it looks that way

    Nickels aren't clad.

I did find this coin in the same roll and also a buffalo nickel that had no date

Roll hunting is for the demented.

Start looking at mint and proof sets, and appreciating nice coins. Cheap to cherrypick and easy to flip on ebay.

Invest in cherrypickers guides and peruse Ebay with a cheap Sherlock Holmes style magnifier and a high resolution monitor.

My nickels worth of advice to cut down the newbie learning curve.

Yes there is even a learning curve to roll hunting.

Should have qualified that... searching nickels are for the demented.

Wide AM's cents and W quarters... make the best use of time strictly looking at known cherry picks and varieties.

I actually think roll hunting is good for improving experience and education. But quantity is the key. Do a box or two and you'll see all sorts of stuff.

BTW, the OP had a legitimate newbie question, but they jumped the gun.

The question should have been "is this an error". ;)

    I wouldn't.

@Changeling .... Welcome aboard.... Your coin in the OP is environmentally damaged and the next one has been physically damaged....called Post Mint Damage (PMD)... It did not happen at the Mint and has no numismatic premium. Good luck in your searches. Cheers, RickO
