1946 San Francisco Mint......what the......

HalfDimeDudeHalfDimeDude Posts: 1,206 ✭✭✭✭✭

Heck....was going on?
Ok here's a tid bit of coin trivia....the 1946 San Francisco mint probably had more varieties than other mints and years.
The 1946 s cent had 8 ddo's. 9 ddr's & 43 RPM's
The 1946 s nickel had 4 ddo's 2 ddr's & 6 RPM's
The 1946 s dime had 14 ddo's 21 ddr's & 21 RPM's
The 1946 s quarter had 5 ddo's 0 ddr's * & 5 RPM's
The 1946 s half had 1 ddo 2 ddr's & 2 RPM's
The one date and mint that actually almost had each denomination a variety except for the *46 s Washington Quarter reverse.....
Why do you suspect so many varieties on just about all denominations from 1 mint in the same year? 1946 s

Why is 1 of this years mint the 46 s Jefferson nickel 5c ddo fs 101 (031.5) so hot but not?

Again another variety that's is unrated, yet runs hot and cold....one could understand with odds of finding a variety on an 46 s coin is greater than not....unless you are looking on a 46 s quarter rev, where you will find an RPM,but no ddr.

Why isn't the 46 s ddo as much in demand as other ddo'or ddr's in this same series?

Even stranger still, all of these dies were created and mint marked at the Philadelphia Mint. So were the ones sent to Denver. Why not just as many P and D mint varieties for that year?

    This is sort of like the 38 D buffalo nickel....as you'll find more D/D D/S D/D/S than just a D mint mark.
I agree with Treashunt as look at the 43 P Jefferson nickel like 70 +/- rpm's alone not even getting into the ddo's & ddr's ...

Just like every Morgan a vam every Jefferson war nickel a variety....some very important ones.

All those varieties ... and not one I would pay a premium for.

When presented in a tabulated form such as that, it certainly does raise some questions. Liquid lunches were popular at the time... ;) Cheers, RickO

I always wondered if you could tie periods of excessive varieties to a particular person or persons working at the mint who were not good at their job and were ultimately fired. Take the 1968 - 1974 period. There were strong doubled dies produced in every year of that period on multiple denominations, along with 3 missing mintmark proofs and numerous RPM's. In 1972 alone, multiple Lincoln cent dies were doubled, with at least 5 of them having doubling we would call 'very strong'. Then, 1975 to 1981, nothing major. 1982 - 1984, strong Lincoln cent doubled dies were produced every year, along with missing mintmark dimes, then nothing for a period again. Other periods that come to mind are 1934 - 1936, 1916 - 1918, 1941 - 1946, and 1955 - 1958.

So is it a $45 nickel or a $650. Nickel?
