Are there any coins you sold ...

U1chicagoU1chicago Posts: 6,569 ✭✭✭✭✭

Are there any coins that you thought were going to be keepers but you ended up selling over the past year because of strong prices?
Are there any coins that you have strongly debated letting go based on recent pricing?

Does anyone think now is a good time to sell and that you could find something nicer (or different) once the current conditions change?

As mainly a type collector (with a few side projects), I've let go of several former "box of 20" coins but have been less willing to sell some others. Even in a box of 20, there are some coins where the connection is stronger, so those are hard to let go. Other coins, while still nice (they had to be to earn a spot), were easier to sell when the price was right. The Morgan below is one such coin that found a new home and helped replenish the funds for future buys.

How in the world did you NOT sell that ‘91 Morgan to me? 😈🍺

....haven’t sold much in the last year, so no, but I recall some pieces from years past that were very sweet but went anyways for the ‘right’ money at the time.

You have to check Instagram and the BST. ;)

And I bet most of us do have some sweet pieces that went for the right money (some of which seem low given today's prices while others seem like brilliant moves if prices have fallen and/or we acquired something that we like more).

I haven’t bought or sold much of anything in the last couple of months. What have I been missing?

I understand the Box of 20 concept but, if I had 20 coins that I really loved; I wouldn't sell one just to 'make room' for another. Nothing wrong with starting an extra box, IMHO.

    BTW-Gorgeous Morgan!!

I’m not a box of 20 “purist” as it is too difficult. It’s closer to 30-35 (and that’s not counting the side projects). So I’m definitely in the camp of there being nothing wrong with starting an extra box.

Almost anything nicely toned seems to keep going up. I’m consistently seeing higher results than 2018-2019 (and some significantly higher than 2015-2017).

Haven’t sold anything of significance in the last two years, but have purchased some nice modern toners during that time.

I've seen some and they are great!
Although higher prices have their negatives, a positive is that it helps bring items to the market that previously might not have been offered.

Sure. I have sold two coins this past year I thought I would hold on to for a while. Tastes changed and they just weren't doing it for me anymore.

NO, but I did end up with a bunch of Canadian Coins I tried to sell that look like they are going to end up being keepers, but not by choice!

Sorry to hear. I’ve been there too with several coins.

If they are silver, maybe it will get easier if spot increases. If not, you need the exchange rate to keep going up. Or you can always start a new Canadian set.

I’ve sold a couple I really loved to buy coins I loved even more. Here’s one of them:

I built a complete set with all the varieties of Fishscale nickels from 1858 to 1921 and these are mainly after that. I inherited them and was trying to trade them off for darn near anything. Have been slowly donating them to YN whenever I see posted requests for Canadian Nickels. I have no interest in building a new set. Loved the Fishscales and the large Canadian pennies, but don't want to start over at todays prices.

That’s a good question. I very rarely sell coins from my collection. But when I do it’s like pulling teeth. I’ve put so much energy into finding just the right ones it hurts to see them go.
To answer your question I have never sold any of my coins based on its value being higher or to make a profit.

The bitterness of "Poor Quality" is remembered long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.

I guess we know where the COVID stimulus money is going.

Not an issue I have experienced... since I keep coins that are not special to me...So no way would I sell coins I really like. Just a collector, not a seller. Cheers, RickO

For my own collection, I have developed a new box of 20 concept.

20 per year cherrypicked varieties and toners mostly
20 for life (dream coins like 1955 ddo, Buffalo 16/16 etc...)
20 exonumia for my state PC
Working on a State Quarter date set.

Allows for about 2 coins per month going forward over the next decade.

Ruthless culling. So if it doesn't make the cut, it gets sold.

    No

When a really nice coin sells quick making me really good money / margin it’s like a 5 star player early draft declaree.
