Toned Peace Dollars

Now I’m no expert and please provide feedback but are not all toned coins whether Morgan’s, Peace or ASE’s artificially toned? There was no intent when struck for any coin to take on a discoloration by any means. The debate lies in whether that toning occurs over time and became a product of its environment. Whether in a burlap bag in a damp vault, or in holder such as old Whitman folders, acid based paper envelopes, PCI holder, Redman holders or taped to old cardboard. When the market is hot on toned coins then men/women try to force a coin to take on the same attributes as a coin that has sat for decades and toned over time by means of sulfur, eggs, heat to name a few. Some will wipe or clean a coin to further spead up this type of toning.

I prefer ones that aged to ones that have been forced. There are a few that I have received that have been cleaned and no longer have their original luster. I have tried my best to put a collection together of such specimens that follow my theory of being a part of their environment.

    3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 11, 12 all AT imho.

    2 and 7 are borderline. I lean AT on #2, and NT on #7.

    1 looks NT. 7 possibly NT, but at least MA. 2 is also borderline. I would not buy the others at problem free prices regardless of what plastic the pieces might be in as all appear at least QT if not blatant AT.

    Toning and Peace dollars - always an interesting discussion.

    I think we can all agree that they don't tone like Morgans.

    As for the coins posted by the OP, some are terminal, so for those it really doesn't matter whether they're NT or AT, they're environmentally damaged at this point. Coin #1 looks NT. Coin #2 is probably AT, but possibly NT. If I submitted it I wouldn't expect it to holder. The rest all look suspect to me.

    I think #1 looks NT.
    I think #2 might be the only one that looks market acceptable. Are they all certified?

    This was clearly gassed in a PCGS slab and then resubmitted to PCGS for reholder and gold shield. This was a problem a couple years ago. PCGS did remove some cert numbers from the database but quite a few are still floating around.

    Toned coins exist on a scale (say... 1 to 10), where 1 is virtually unacceptable and 10 is readily acceptable by the market. While artificially toned coins tend to be rejected more frequently than naturally toned ones, both can end up anywhere on this scale depending on their appearance.

    That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

    Most of your peace dollars are artificially toned, including the one in the PCGS slab above. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

    All tarnish is environmental damage... the debate for most collectors boils down to intentional or natural.... either way, a damaged surface. Cheers, RickO

    Sorry, I have to agree, several of your coins are AT.
    Peace Dollars for the most part don't tone with color.
    Golden, Brown, Grey are typical.

    I would be happy to provide you with scope images and show you these are not AT. Here is the 1923 from image 5...notice the layering. AT will not appear like this...

    Accelerated toning can appear any way it wants to appear.

    And for crying out loud, all "toning" is a natural process, it's a question of whether it has been accelerated or not.

    Peace dollars can and do tone nice, but just not like Morgan dollars. I get suspicious if there is a Peace dollar trying to look like an 1880-S! Here are a few that I have, which I believe are NT:

    That second 1922 looks like it was gassed in the slab. Just because something is in a PCGS holder doesn’t mean the coin went in looking like that. There is a seller on eBay who has tons of these. He would gas them and then send them in for Trueview so they got new holders and Cert numbers. They often have this grayish pattern that seems to emanate from three sides. The color progression isn’t natural and you’ll recognize it once you’ve seen a few.

    Coin 2 - AT which looked NT at some point but someone enhanced it (unc details)
    Coin 3 - same as coin 2 NT that has been enhanced and now AT (unc details)
    Coin 4 - AT (unc details)

    Coin 6 - AT (au details)
    Coin 7 - NT terminal toning (environmental damage) (unc details)

    I think coin 7 is your best toner of the bunch, its not AT but the toning is so terminal on the reverse, it isn't market acceptable and would grade environmental damage. Coin 2 and 3 might could sneak into a TPG holder because I think there is SOME NT to them but I also think that they have been accelerated to a degree.
