Yesterday, at my favorite B+M shop. This roll caught my eye. For a number of reasons. The look. Old! 1958p Jefferson nickels. Another reason. Couldn't for the life of me open this sucker. Tried so I can take a gander at a few. No way. That's one of the reasons. There is a possibility that these coins been in there for at least 50 years? Maybe? Another reason, many can be in awesome shape? Another reason, it does appear to have a few possible "Black beauties"? I might see 4? Then the last reason, the price! She only wanted $2.50. Yes, $2.50. I took some photos. Check it out. Lol.

The Bottom of the roll.

The possible Black beauties? 4 maybe?

Will Open SOON...

That is interesting. Some of those old tubes shrink and you have to break it to get the coins out. Not sure if the Meghrigs did.

For $2.50 you can't go wrong.

Not a big risk for 50c over face. I don't know of any 1958 Jeff varieties, but hoping you find some gems.
My grandfather had some nickels in plastic rolls like that, and I had to crack them out. No other way around it.
    Good luck!

The fact that a dealer only wanted $2.50 for a roll with $2.00 in face value may tell you something about current demand for Jefferson nickels.

Or, the dealer knows that there is actually nothing promising in the roll. Knowing this, she didn't have the heart to sell it to me for a higher price? :D

Those types of rolls are killer tough to get into. I’ve banged the heck out of them to get the coins out. I’ve hacksawed lengthwise to get bullion value coins out.

Recently, I saw a suggestion (maybe on this board) to soak the roll in very hot water to get it to expand so the coins can be removed. Good luck!

Thanks. ;) I took the roll with me to work. On my breaks and lunch, I'll mitickesly work on it with my trusty razor blade. I'll keep you guys notified. Lol.
That is a good idea using hot water. If It doesn't work here at work, I'll wait until I get home and try that.

Cool! I consider that a good deal. Ya, ya their common, who cares? Their shiny, like new, and OLD. and its only 50c over face.

  • joeykoinsjoeykoins Posts: 17,636 ✭✭✭✭✭

Finished going through the roll. Except the last two. Stuck on the bottom of the tube. I'll Check out when I get home, plus there were about 10 d minted nickels. Two or three, were "VERY interesting". Possible "inverted d"? Some nickels came very close to the FS designation. My scope will tell all. Thanks. Worth the 50c spent. Lol. :D

    Results after Scoping:
Sad end result. Nothing. Nothing really worth keeping. Only a 50c loss. :/

Even if you find nothing, it was worth the 50 cents for the treasure hunt. I have bought rolls just to try to find something, I never did though, so I gave it up.

Cheers for the effort. I used to keep the nickels my mom gave me for milk at lunch in the mid-60s. 1958 (P) was one Jeff I never found. I think I have that old Whitman album around somewhere, wish post wasn't so expensive or I'd take one. LOL!
