If the mint started a lottery program.

I wonder how it would be perceived by the public if every year the mint purposely released some crazy errors into circulation. It would be a pretty fun hunt, I would think .

i WISH they would
They kind of already have, the way their software works for hot new releases.
I had not thought of that..... A 'for profit' market for process errors....Of course, that would only lead to 'purposeful, manufactured' errors for sale... and eventually destroy the error market... much like artificial tarnish. Cheers, RickO
I’m not so sure. The pattern market is doing pretty well and the largest category of those are special issues for customers.
@Zoins.... Good point, however, patterns are still mint product, whereas I think the fake error market would be easily entered and multiple, bizarre items introduced claiming mint error origin. Interesting subject... could go either way. Cheers, RickO
People have been making fake US coins for over a hundred years. Added mint marks, modified dates, heads, etc. with as much counterfeiting as there is now, it’s a wonder we all still collect!
@Zoins... Good point... Just another area to grant the crooks another market. You are correct, it never stops. And yet, here we are...Collecting. Cheers, RickO
I'd consider it another gimmick.
Probably, but it might renew interest in coin collecting for a younger generation.
Computer-controlled errors (how else would the Mint do it?) would have no more soul than the hundreds of cartoon reverses that now disfigure our coinage.
At the end of the day isn't the reason people aren't as interested in coin collecting just that they don't use coins that much? Some of these gimmicks may help short term, but it also seems like it would be a net negative (since I'd then want to collect all types of intentional errors).
I would lose. Guaranteed.
I spent a couple hours on the internet unsuccessfully trying to get a V75.
As far as I am concerned they already have a lottery on some issues.
How many years ago was it the Canadian Mint made 1 of something and sold it on eBay?
Truth
Yes ,and I also agree with the post above yours. I can see it create interest for financial reasons but not where it will last because it is artificial. How much impact have the W quarters had? Is more than a minimal fraction of the public even aware of it and of those who are, do they care?
The primary reason I believe coin collecting isn't as competitive as a recreational activity as it used to be is that there are a lot more alternatives versus the past. There is just no getting around this fact.
