I never knew these existed, much less that PCGS would slab them, kinda looks like a cheesy TV offered coin to me.

Yes, they've been around for a couple of years

There have been Liberian coins offered on TV before, can't remember if the Morgan was. The ads mention them being worth 'ten dollars' and in tiny type on the TV screen, it mentioned they are in Liberian dollars.

not sure if it's liberia, but one of the african countries also has a coin with at least the peace dollar obverse. it was listed on the forum over the summer. i guess they know a good design when they see one. perhaps we can get them to talk to our legislature!!!

They are Liberian... I have two $5 coins because I like proofs and the designs... hey, they were cheap

I have both Liberian silver proof Morgans listed in my auctions. They catalog in Krause's at $50.00 and are a pretty awesome looking coin. I especially like the one with the heraldic eagle reverse. For many of us, it's about as close as we're ever going to get to owning a proof Morgan

P.S. Unless the seller got that coin as a gift, he lost money on that auction.

Whats up with that coin, how did it ever get in a 69 slab. It looks like there are milk spots all over it.

They are in fact Liberian, I have the entire series in PCGS-69. Including the Trade dollar and SLQ.
They are beautiful coins in my opinion.

I wonder if any of these coins have ever BEEN in Liberia? I doubt it. Sorry guys, but these things are medalets that are designed to attract collectors like flypaper. Collect what you like, but I don't see much merrit to them.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder! Would I collect these because I think they might ever be worth something? No way... Would I collect them because I think they are stunning coins? You bet.....

And I heartily agree that most of these coins have never been anywhere near Liberia. Many third world nations mint coins for the collector market, and those coins are designed, minted and distributed in other countries. I don't know that they would appeal to the purist, but they bring a lot of people into the hobby that might not otherwise be exposed to coin collecting.

I have a few of them because I collct Morgans. I was talking to one of the salesman @ PandaAmerica who was the initial distributers of these things and it was interesting because PA stopped using PCGS because they weren't designating DCam at the time to DarkSide stuff so PA started using ICG instead who was using the DCam designation.
But I'm here to tell you that they are almost worthless and you can't give them away never mind selling them.

Interesting that you sell them danglen. I would kill for a Mint State Type 1 in an ICG or PCGS slab. Most of what you see is the common Type 2.

I sure can't say they're one of my top sellers, or even close. But I do sell three or four a month, so I can't complain. People that actually get to see one in person as opposed to an image have very positive reactions to them.

The modern coins that Liberia sanctions is not near as interesting and do not carry the dramatic historical significance as the 1847-90's
coinage, both official and patterns.

The history of the origins of Liberia and The United States official and private backing of its creation
is worthy of a seriously funded documentary.

Its too bad that one of most vivid visionaries of the project (creation of Liberia) died so early in its founding.
