Apollo 11 Silver Dollar (5 ounce) Commemorative Coin Lands Top COTY Honors

OrlenaOrlena Posts: 343 ✭✭✭✭

Where is the love? I was knocked out by this big boy the day it was issued. First 5 ounce curved coin, beautiful design commemorating a truly historic event, but it didn’t sell out and you can still pick up a raw one for not much over issue price. I don’t get it. ASE’s (which I collect) cause people to get up every day at 4:35 to fight for one when the mintage is 4 or 5 times higher than the Apollo 11 coin. I love this hobby but it often leaves me wondering......

that seems to kill things, then there is the 5oz price.

the ASE is much more widely collected.

I love these coins - I have 2 of em [used to have 3] - but ... why was this 2019 issue voted 2021 coin of the year? 🤔

Well, I certainly love mine. I call it "The Beast":

It is always two years behind. The reason is that 2021 is not over yet and they use all of 2020 to gather the candidates.

    This.

Hundred thousands plus people collect ASE's by date and mint mark. There are VERY VERY VERY few people who collect ALL commemorative coins.

Agreed; I guess whatever they did it would be a little unusual. If they called it the 2019 coin of the year, people would wonder why that is happening in 2021. One thing that likely is possible is to have only a one year lag (although I don't know how long it takes to gather all the contenders since there are so many coins issued each year).

@U1chicago totally - I mean, you could have a super list compiled 1-jan of following year [compile it as year progresses so little work come 1-jan], send it out to your voting bloc for returns by mar? apr? tabulate and publish no later than fall --- not understanding [outside of this past year] why it takes so long, but - HEY - I really do love this coin, so bully for it for making a 2021 list 😄

Just another "made for collector" hunk of silver.

The US Mint has treaded very, very carefully into the gimmick coin market, but for this one, the use of the curved feature was genius. I think the design and execution were perfect and Coin Of The Year honors well deserved.

@Orlena.... While it is indeed a beautiful commemorative, and honors an amazing achievement, collecting is a personal thing. Some like Lincoln cents, others Buffalo nickels etc.. Just because a coin is attractive and you really like it, does not translate to universal attraction. Coin collectors are selective...and the term 'coin collector' is a very large umbrella that includes many, many individuals. Collect what you like - and others will do the same. Cheers, RickO

I have one that I love.
It's in OGP, and I use it as a paperweight.
