Random Question: Why was the Carson City Mintmark "CC" and Not Simply "C"

Using the same logic, shouldn't San Francisco be "SF" and New Orleans "NO"?

Because Carson City was incorporated as, wait for it, Da Da "Carson City". It is the full and complete legal name of the town. oooppppsssss, City!
San Francisco is the exception...SAN meaning "Dump!" ....OK, I guess I'm just prejudiced against San Fran, because I hated being there involuntarily. Hell, I would have hated being there voluntarily! Speaking of dumps....Well guess I hadn't better get into San Frans prevailing laws.
The people that initiated the C.C. Mint were politically motivated to show that the Silver, in the coinage, from Nevada, came from Carson City whereas a single C could be mistaken as being from the mint in Cowabunga, Cesspool Flats, USA! And they weren't sure that the Mint in Charlotte, NC wasn't ever going to run out of Gold for minting. By time the Charlotte mint closed in 1913, for lack of Gold, the Carson City Mint had already run it's course.
Be glad, it gives us different coins to collect!

BTW, the above is a vast simplification of the entire history of both mints, and the politics behind them, but should be satifactory for 95% of the population! The rest of you will just have to go research it!

When the legislation for the Carson City mint was passed the fate of the Charlotte Mint had not been resolved. It was still possible that the Charlotte Mint could still be returned to coining status. It is very different from the case of the Denver mint using the D mint mark.
