Completed my shorter set of Walking Liberty Halves last evening.

jesbrokenjesbroken Posts: 10,624 ✭✭✭✭✭

My shorter set of 1939-1947 D Walking Liberty Half Dollars is finally complete. I won a 1940 S Walker on Great Collections last evening to finish the set. I started the set with intentions of it being an AU 58 set all in ANACS small white holders, but that turned out to be a project that would take longer than I have left, so I decided on MS64-MS66 and that is what I stuck with. Most of the Walker's below 1939 are out of my reach in MS, so I won't waste my time with them. I may upon occasion upgrade one or two, but I'm pretty content with what I have.
Now to figure my next target, that is what makes this so much fun. You can GTG if you want, but most will be able to discern the grade without much effort.

Better than average detail on the obverse for this poorly struck issue.
I'll go 65 (assuming the scratches above IGWT are on the holder).

    MS 64

I think that right-facing, obverse field scratch is on the coin and not the holder, which is the only thing holding it back, IMHO.

Strike is WELL above average for this strike rarity.

Congrats on finishing, as ANY Walker set is TOUGH, especially, with quality examples such as yours.

You should be very happy with your accomplishment.

    Nice accomplishment @Jesbroken
Would love to see the set as a whole, like an overall shot.
Thanks for sharing! Enjoyed Guessing the Grade as you progressed.

One other issue are the two coins 1939 S and 1940 which are on the way to PCGS to be graded. In my opinion they are crucial pieces to the set, especially the 39 S which Walkerguy21D was gracious and kind enough to sell me. Can't wait to see the grade on it especially.

Congratulations on your WLH short set.... They look really nice in that album. A great coin, I wish we had them in circulation today, as they were when I was a kid. Cheers, RickO

Congratulations. I have a question(s). Why is the short set 1939-47? Why is 1939 the determinitive starting date? And...looks like a fun set to work on. I've thought about it. I think I'll get started!

Good question, Hydrant. My reasoning was in all actuality stemming from I considered it the war years set which was 39 thru 45 and didn't just wish to stop there with only 2 years left. Just my wacko thought process. Also, the coins are pretty expensive in MS64 and MS65 from there back, which played a role in the decision, also. I would never be able to afford even 1/4 of the coins previous to 1939 if that. I wish you the best and look forward to your sharing your progress in the endeavor. Look out for loads of fun. I decided early on to have both blast white and toned coins in the collection because I like both and the only way to get ricko to like the coins. >:)
Thanks for all your nice comments.
