Scam artist alert, new member.
As some of you know, I am looking for a Barber half with an ANACS photo certificate. I posted a WTB post on the BST US coin forum. I was recently PM'd by a new member that goes by Jonasm. "Kindly contact cortes in texas,he has Barber Half with ANACS photo certificate for sale in good condition Here’s his email cortesshasta@aol.com" I emailed the email address and he replied that he did have one and he was willing to sell it. He said he was in Texas and asked where I was from. I asked him for photos and he sent photos of an ANACS yellow holder with a 1900 PF62 cameo in it. A quick search of EBAY and I found the photos of the coin he sent me with an item location in Oregon. I believe the Ebay auction to be legit, but this scam artist just grabbed some photos from EBAY of an ANACS graded half. If this member has contacted you, be aware, he is a scam artist.

Did he quote a price? The other option was he was planning on buying it off Ebay and selling to you at a higher price.

Seriously, you would entertain sending a coin before payment was made? I highly doubt it.
And anyone who asked me to do it would immediately be suspected as a thief. As I said, the payment can be insured and recovered if necessary. The coin cannot be recalled.

Fortunately I didn't give him/her any personal information. After I figured out the scam, I sent him a PM saying "A piece of advice, you should probably hire a criminal defense attorney."

Is it possible he’s filling want lists above the listed eBay price with the intention of purchasing the coin and flipping it here? Has he received money and not provided a coin? Seen this before. Just asking

One he would not be able to find because I've looked long and hard for one.

If the Buyer pays you by PayPal Friends & Family, they can use a Credit Card and can also file a chargeback! It seems that some Forum Members mistakenly believe PPFF is safer than standard PP...

Why does this not surprise me! This general rule of thumb has been around longer than you've been around. For someone who's been a member for about 3 1/2 years, averaging just shy of 400 posts a month (all quality posts), I guess you've been too busy to notice these types of discussions about 'new' members....they've been pulling this stunt for a LOT longer than you've been aroundthough I can see how you'd have missed them, what with posting threads about how you're CC's are almost maxed out (as one example), the next mint offering you'll make a killing on....this general rule has been around longer than you have. Doesn't seem to bother legit buyers, but it DOES bother you....hmmmmm

I am not defending the alleged scam artist in this thread. I was simply commenting that I would - and everyone should - be suspicious of requests for shipment prior to payment. Now, I'm quite sure people do it on BST if they "know" each other. But if a buyer on eBay, or any other retail site, asked for such a thing it would be suspicious. Perhaps you are in the habit of sending items to a trustworthy Nigerian prince when he asks.
My comment was in response to a long-time forum member who suggested asking the seller to ship prior to payment. You seem to be agreeing with me that this is a bad idea at the same time that you are criticizing my posts on another thread.

If you do that (use a credit card) doesn't the buyer pay the 3% fee? I thought that PPFF was used to avoid the 3% transaction fee.
