My First Auction Screw up

My first auction gaff. Was looking to purchase a 1882-S GSA in MS66. Wasn't paying close attention and the auction bell notification went off. When I finally look over I thought the current offering was the coin I wanted (also a GSA in MS66). Bid a few times and win. Oops, wrong coin. I did get the 1882-S but also majorly overpaid for something I don't need/want. I guess it gets thrown in duplicate pile.

I wish I could claim I was drinking, but no such excuse!

It happens. See also: my recent thread on accidentally purchasing a duplicate. Sorry you missed out on the one you wanted. I'll bet you'll be particularly careful next time.

That's a difference between floor and internet bidding. In a live auction, you would have been able to ask the auctioneer to reopen the lot, and he probably would have, if he had not already moved on to the next lot.

I once bid on 2 different 55 ddo in two different auctions that were going at the same time and won them both! My story ended happily though as I resold it in a different auction and they made 10% and so did I!

I fell asleep watching an auction on my laptop.

Woke up and slid my finger to wake up computer.

Cursor was on the bid button.

Bid $4k on something and WON.

Embarrassed to say did not have a liquid $4k.

Heritage was sympathetic and gave me a mulligan.

Most stressful couple of days of my life!

Generally speaking you can NOT reopen the bidding on a sold item.

There's also the "timely missed bid" exception. [To be completely fair, I feel the need to include it.]

I accidentally bought this one........

a nice PR67BN, but I already had a somewhat nicer one. I thought I was bidding on the prior coin, an 1883 PR67BN.

Still have it. Need to sell it.

Thanks for the answer nags. I didn't want to say anything before I knew the answer. Anyway, don't feel so bad. I did the same thing TWICE! It was not their fault it was my fault. So I stopped bidding on their auctions and most other auctions in general. I'm just not computer savvy. I get confused. But.......last night I won a coin from an online auction and I'm really happy. Been searching for that coin in that grade and look for over 5 years. I paid way too much but I don't care. I got the coin. So......sometimes things do work out for the best.

I couldn’t believe my luck when I got a screaming deal on a toned Frankie. Then I realized it wasn’t FBL and it wasn’t a good deal at all. I recovered, and learned to change my bidding strategy.

Count me in the accidental bidding, internet/computer lag. The auction house was understanding and I would up making a couple of payments.

I haven't ever bid on a coin at heritage or other auction site. I did bid on and won some civil war memorabilia signed by an ancestor. It was hectic! I don't think I have the nerves to do that often. My little heart was pumping at the end...

I knew I would be distracted during the Super Bowl last year, so I put low-ish bids on three nearly identical 3 legged nickels in case I forgot to follow the auction and one happened to go cheap. Well, I did forget to follow the auction and when I checked later that night I had won all three!

Sold one on the BST and one on eBay for just what I paid. It happens.

My worst auction screw ups was when I forgot the auction was closing and did not get to give a final bid... therefore did not win. I would frequently put in an initial bid to see where the item was going, then decide if I wanted it. Cheers, RickO

I bought a coin in an OGH and even though the label was green there was no CAC sticker which I mistakenly thought was the case and of course I overpaid for the coin.

My first Heritage auction...there's a coin I really want. But I haven't used the system, and am worried it won't work when I need it to. So I decide to practice bidding before my lot comes us. I choose an item with active bidding...hit bid...and no one bids after me. I win a counterstamped half cent. Fortunately, it didn't cost much!

And the bid button worked fine for me later in the auction...when I was decisively outbid on the item I had really wanted! :-0
