A prime example of buy the coin not the holder

Both of these are in a PCGS gold shield holder graded AG03. A great reason for following the statement “Buy the coin, not the holder” For the most part most coins in holders are graded correctly but the range between the next grade can be a huge difference in eye appeal. All the more reason not to buy the 1st one you see.

Both coins look accurately graded to me.. it's not clear which you'd prefer, the one with more wear and great surfaces, or the one with a little more detail but with many fresher looking marks on it.

All the more reason to use TPG as a guide, but as a collector, buy the one that suits your eye.

Key date, yes, but neither coin gets me excited as a type collector. If I happened to own both, I'd sell both and get a nicer example.

Grading is subjective. Your eye is better than anyone else’s opinion.

Definitely the lower coin. Much better detail. Its at least an AG +
The focus should always be the coin... Not the slab, not the label, not the TPG, not the provenance. The coin and your perception of quality. Cheers, RickO
As a lowball collector, I like the first coin much more, even if it's not a PO01.
I like the first coin over the second coin. The nose mark on number 2 annoys me.
What's the deal with star 6 on the second coin?
