No hits on the obv field whatsoever except for a minute scratch that is hardly noticable on her neck and clear Fields in the Rev with a PL back. Paid 70$ I think she looks nice.

Thanks! I think she looks beautiful 😊 if I could've gotten her for a little less I'd almost send her off to get a grade

Nice subtle pull away toning seen around the obv date and stars.

I seen that when I picked her up, what causes that ?

The 1880-S is so common that buying an unslabbed one is probably not a good idea unless it was sharply discounted. The photos you show make we wonder about just how the fields look in-hand. This may seem harsh but the 1880-S is not a coin to go easy on when grading.

Imo the Fields look great in hand.. I do know that year is known for gems with sharp strikes and fields full of luster. I paid 70$ , I don't feel that is an unfair price but I am no professional. Either way I like her. thank you for the advice as always 😊

The lighting is far too diffused over the surfaces to be able to tell a grade, because every mark is masked. It's also difficult to tell how the surfaces actually look in terms of lustre and/or reflectivity.

"Feels" like a nice coin but I agree it's impossible to grade from the photos. Assuming there are no major hidden problems, it could go from MS62 (if the obverse luster is as muted and the check is scuffed up, which can't be ruled out from the photo) to MS65 (if the luster is better than it looks and hits are modest).

By the way, I think it's totally fine to buy a raw Morgan like this, if you can see the coin in hand before purchasing it.

I've looked it over pretty well. As far as( hits) or scratches go there are only two that are pretty minute. I'm still working on my photo skills to capture luster

I picked her up at a shop and plucked her from a roll of 1880-S . I'll try and work on my photography skills ! 😊

Is that some PVC hazing on the reverse?

I'm sorry you are not getting it graded - that would be an interesting test of your "eye" and our ability (inability) to grade from photos. I'm sure your pictures are not enhanced, but lighting can be cause coins to look better or worse than they do in hand.

The toning seems mottled in the photo, which would be a distraction for many, but I could see getting a 65 if it looks good in hand.

I stopped buying common Morgans raw 30+ years ago when I learned from ANACS I was paying MS64 prices for MS63 coins. Ouch.

Dumb question: What is pull away toning?

If that doesn't work then I'm not sure😂 but I tried to capture her lustre and fields . For some reason the video quality playback is bad .... But I put it next to a coin that has more of a muted lustre to compare too

I'm not entirely sure , I looked it over pretty well and I want to say it's the toning. The lines run the same way they do on the obv.

I don't much about Morgans and how one year grades differently than another - That being said, and based on the video I would give it 66 PL.
And then add in my grading skills vs. what PCGS thinks and you probably have a 65 - worth a shot, plus you'll have a reference point once you get it back.
    Nice looking!
