Coins on TV

Was recently watching an episode of Matlock about a coin theft. The episode was called The Thief and was aired in March 1989. In the episode the owner of a rare coin store is arrested for allegedly murdering an employee who was stealing from him. Matlock is an acquaintance and had been in his store in the past. Matlock told him that his legal fee was very expensive (Matlock's normal fee was $100,000.00). So the owner of the store agrees to give Matlock an 1804 silver dollar and an 1836 Gobrecht proof. Matlock hesitates and says " Give me the Liberty Seateds through 1851 and you got a deal." He then tells the store owner that he got a hundred grand worth of legal services for only $13.00. The owner agrees which only proves that the script writers not only didn't check coin values, but they can't add either as the seated liberty dollars from 1840 thru 1851 add up to 12 coins, not 11.

    That was an interesting episode!

I believe that the Matlock episode featured the first appearance of PCGS containers ("slabs") on a network television program.

PCGS containers holding St. Gaudens $20 1924 and Morgan silver dollar 1881-S
The grades appear to be MS-63 and MS-65

The containers shown in the episode are PCGS green containers which the company used from 1986 to 1989 to encapsulate graded United States coins.

There was a Hawaii 5-O episode (original series) that had something to do with a coin, but details elude me.

IIRC the Hawaii 5-0 episode involved the 1913 nickel.

On long road trips I will occasionally listed to the ‘old time radio show’ channel on XM. I happened to be tuning in a couple months ago and there was a detective show called “Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar” and the show centered around the theft of a Confederate Half Dollar. It was actually an interesting show and the climax of the story plot differentiated between the original and re-strike of the Confederate Half which is pretty detailed numismatic stuff! In a Google search, I found this Coin Word article had featured this episode too: https://www.coinworld.com/news/precious-metals/johnny-dollar-on-case-of-confederate-half-dollar.html Good stuff!

Lucy, the Coin Collector. In an episode of ‘The Lucy Show’ Jerry finds a rare penny worth $16.50, Lucy and Viv decide to search through thousands of pennies to find a rare one and pay for a new coat and fix their leaky plumbing. They finally succeed but clumsily drop the coin down the storm drain in the street. To retrieve it, they must go undercover as sewer workers. If I remember correctly, it was a 1912-s Lincoln cent. I haven’t seen this episode in years and, of course, only in syndication.

Mr. Wilson of "Denis the Menace" was a coin collector and talked about a 1909 SVDB Lincoln cent, but I do not remember actually seeing the coin. I saw this episode a long time ago and don't remember much.

I do not watch enough TV to see these shows.... However, I do recall Las Vegas when silver dollars were used in machines and on tables... Wish I had kept those I won in Blackjack...always cashed them in for folding money.... Cheers, RickO

Twilight Zone - "A Penny for Your Thoughts" Dick York purchases a paper and he tosses a nickel in the box and it stays standing on its edge. He can then read everyone's mind. "Mr. Hector B. Poole, resident of the Twilight Zone. Flip a coin and keep flipping it. What are the odds? Half the time it will come up heads, half the time tails. But in one freakish chance in a million, it'll land on its edge. Mr. Hector B. Poole, a bright human coin - on his way to the bank."

I think I vaguely remember this one...5-0 couldn’t figure out what the thief did with the coin and it turns out they spent it in a vending machine or newspaper kiosk machine near where it was stolen with the plan to retrieve it out of the machine’s coin box later.

    Correct.

Here is my relevant post from a prior thread:

"Of course there is the obligatory mention of the iconic original Hawaii Five-O episode that involved the then $100,000 nickel.

Here is an excerpt of one of my posts on the below linked thread:

In the 1973 episode of Hawaii Five-0 titled, "The $100,000 Dollar Nickel" (which was based on the theft of the Olsen Specimen of the 1913 Liberty Head Nickel that had just set the record for the price paid for a single coin the year prior in 1972), there was an interesting parallel to the real life theft subject of this thread. In both cases the coin(s) were stolen at a coin show by a thief who used a distraction. In the fictional TV episode the con artist's attractive wife provides the distraction as character Arnie Price examines a dealer's coins at the coin show being held in Waikiki's Ilikai Hotel.

For any not familiar with the celebrity history of this coin, as above noted it was the first coin to sell for $100,000. In 2010 it was sold to an undisclosed party for the sum of $3,737,500.

As a post note, the below linked thread contains an interesting discussion regarding the fact that the actual 1913 Liberty Head Nickel was pictured on the show itself."
