Thinking about when coin shows start back up in earnest...

It seems to me that dealers will have accumulated way more coins than they've sold during the pandemic. Will that mean lots more choice coins for collectors to discover at coin shows or have dealers been moving their inventory out via the web etc.?

I think it's been a real scramble for the top dealers to get good coins the past year. Inventory seems to disappear quickly on the sites I follow. I also think a lot of better coins never make it to their sites and are gobbled up by preferred customers. We may find even staler inventory on the bourse post COVID ( please let there be a post)

I know many sportscard collectors and this segment has exploded during the boredom of the pandemic. A lot of dollars chasing the same things on the Internet. Where high grade vintage was driving that market the past few years ( explosive) modern "chase" cards are also now stupid hot. I'm talking about recent releases.

Collector behavior during the pandemic has been interesting to be sure.

Attending a coin show would be really nice but there's just too much death and suffering going on. I am grateful for this forum for sure. Time takes time. Peace Roy

When shows do begin to flourish again (likely another year), it will be a mix - depending on geographical market, size of shows, and dealer orientation (that means, dealers oriented to the internet, or not). Many web dealers have been doing very well...small, local shops also have had good traffic. Coins seem to have been turning moderately well. It will be really interesting to see the large shows return... i.e. FUN etc.. Networks are being formed and exploited for better coins (much as Mark said above). I think it will be a slightly modified world, post pandemic. Cheers, RickO

My inventory has shrunk considerably. Quickest visual is I've always maintained at least 2 double row boxes of raw coins($25 + up). I'm down to 1/2 that.

When it comes to the smaller shows there will be a significant portion of dealers that don’t have an online presence — and I’d expect to see lots of fresh stuff.

Either way, I don’t care, at this point I would very happily browse stale stuff. 🤓

I have been on a multi-year effect to build inventory.

When Covid hit, my Inventory started to decline as my material sold. Trying to replace inventory got a lot harder.

I started buying aggressively and my inventory got back up to where it was but starting flatlining for months.

Just recently, I got a lot more aggressive in my buying and I am now growing my inventory again.

Selling coins on line or at the few small shows that have been open has been very good. Replacing inventory is very difficult. I am going to the first small show for this year in a couple of weeks primarily just to find some inventory.

Since I use shows as mainly a buying opportunity, the lack of recent shows had hurt my "better" inventory.
However, my "show stuff" pile....stuff not really good for internet sales but great for shows, has been growing because I loaded up last year for the spring shows that didn't happen.
I would be willing to dump it even at cost just to get rid of it, so at least from my perspective, when shows open up again, I will be willing to deal.

I totally agree - when the shows open back up, the good stuff is not going to be there. However, there will certainly be a whole lot of "swill" available.

Not big shows, but we have had them along the Wasatch Front in Utah since last June without any problems. They limit the bourse for a bit, with 1-hour rotations, but no problems. No one got sick. Only difference are people hiding their identities.

I went to one in the Hartford area today, slow generally, just some of the usual dealers.

I heard that one of the show regulars in NY and northeast was in the hospital with a really bad ulcer. "Russell", standing with cap anyone know him?

They put their life on the line everyday and then you see pictures of people at coin shows and stores wearing no masks. I was hopeful that coin guys wore masks. It's what made me believe I would attend the first big show. The big time dealers I talk with always stress to their customers to mask up. Many have it right on their websites.

Dealers are doing Internet sales like crazy, right now, and without shows they are having trouble replenishing their inventories. When shows finally make a comeback (I can’t wait!!); I think there will be a lot more wholesale buying than retail selling, at least for a little while.

I agree that alot of internet sales due to the pandemic would have dealer inventories depressed. I would like to think that soon after shows start up, some sellers who do not wish to sell to dealers thru the net will be disposing of their inventories face to face leading to dealer inventories ( i.e. new stuff ) increasing and then " new stuff " will be hitting the market. Hoping so anyway. I myself am looking forward to show start up.

At my local show there’s a health department mandate to mask up. Generally most people at the show are masked but there are some dealers and customers who don’t. I don’t like wearing masks but I like the alternative far less.

In any case the local show has been pretty decent in attendance. The last one had more dealers than I’m used to seeing. The February one is the biggest one so I’m curious to see how it goes.

That's all that happened at the last Dalton, Ga. show last August. Retail was no where to be found for me.

I know Russell a real character he had a problem counting $168 at one time I couldn't believe it..

Shots or not, would YOU go to a show even when it is promised all had shots and tested +??
even though the new PRES is doing a stellar job to fight the virus.... even if he manages to do as he said he would.

Got my 1st round of Moderna on 12/30. 2nd due this week. As a front line worker ( 911 paramedic ) I've seen what covid can do. I know, it's a personal choice, I made mine.

There was a 100+ dealer coin show in our area Friday and Saturday. I didn't see any dealers with a shortage of inventory. Quite the opposite. There were dealers from all over the country. We have had two smaller shows in the area prior to this big annual show. The small shows(30-40 tables) were mostly local dealers. Attendance was up compared to the past annual shows.

We used to have NOISE coin shows in the Chicago suburbs. They appear to have pulled the plug so now we have to wait for Central States in spring (if it actually happens).

Took my mother thru a vaccine drive. It went like clockwork.

Eventually see 24hr drive up in masse. They will figure it out and ramp it up.

Considering the state of the economy shows will be lean for sellers. Many people in survival mode trying make ends meet. I will be setting up to pursue buying opportunities I don’t expect much on sell side. Probably more looky looks than buyers.

My focus has become low pop slabbed world coins especially Mexico plus getting some more currency graded at PCGS.
