Has the US Mint ever consider polygon shapes ?

Just for discussion, Has the U.S. Mint ever or consider making coinage that had polygon shapes ?
Would it drive the vending ppl insane nowadays ?
Could it just be for bullion related types or for public use ?
I have 2 non-collectables, at least for me, that I've had since 77'(grad year) but every now & then I look at them because I like the polygon shapes, more so with the brass 3 pence.
Has the US Mint ever consider this ?

Yes, it was considered for the dollar coin. I don’t know why they ultimately decided against it. Probably cost more for them at the time.
It feels like they tried to go with that for the SBA but then bailed.
I vaguely recall that there were objections from the vending industry that a multi-sided SBA would jam the machine, so the mint went with a round coin and used the multi-side as an inner border.
Just the 1915 PPE $50 octagons.

The Philadelphia Mint produced brass 2 Franc coins dated 1943 for Belgian Congo which were hexagonal.
And while not a true polygon as it has curved sides, the Philadelphia Mint also produced a four-sided 5 cent coin dated 1943 for Curacao and Suriname. Officially the coin is cataloged as a Curacao issue.

As far as shapes on coins... I just wish they would get rid of the 'block head people' images and return to art.

Technically a medal, but the 1925 Norse-American commem as well.
Technically, all US coins are polygons. A circle is just a polygon with an infinite number of sides.
