O/T: Am I the only one who tends to not remember we are in a global pandemic

I ask this due to package not moving in the mail system for weeks some times more. Out of 350 000 people in the city where I live 30 died of covid-19 in a full year. In the larger city just near me of 1.3 million people a few hundred died. Globally 1.5 million in any normal year 60 million die. Some times it is hard to even remember we are in a pandemic at all. Not saying it is not real it is but seems like more are dying of suicides, not getting treatment for worse things or surgeries and so on and so on.

Not trying to downplay this I know it is real. And I am well aware my packages are not even comparable to people passing away. Just does not feel much like anything some times.

Everyone in my house is keenly aware (my wife, the mother of my elementary aged kids is high risk). The rest of my family...hit or miss.

In my province we will be under curfew for a full month starting today at 8h00pm till 5h00am each day. It just all feels over the edge some times almost like the world has gone insane. How are we ever going to get threw this if a lot of people will not take the vaccine. Seems like this will go on for 4-5 years easily. I understand those that want it and those that do not it's up to each person to make that choice no one else.

Dallas has bad numbers. Two of my kids live in Seattle, far less frequency. How good are the numbers? Lord knows.

I follow the Johns Hopkins dashboard for global and US confirmed cases and deaths. You are fortunate you live in Canada while this is going on. We can't keep people from gathering inside and a large portion refuse to wear masks. US deaths were averaging 3500 per day this week and SoCal funeral homes were turning away families wanting to bury the dead. As oldabe indicated, some places aren't seeing this level of sickness. I'm in south east TN and it seems to be a slow onslaught with 10,000 positive cases and 100 deaths in a County of 100k since March.

  • People here in Canada most comply but some are getting fed up. But in the end most will continue to comply as will I.

I love Canada, served with some of your special forces, great guys. Down to earth. I have only been to Toronto a couple times but loved it. Played poker with those dollar coins you had well before the US had them if I remember.

I lost two of my shipmates the last week of the year. We have been in touch for many years, ships reunions, chat rooms, zoom meetings. All of a sudden, sick and dead in a matter of days. Real shocker. RickO

Are you the only one who doesn't remember we are in a global pandemic? Likely.

Are there incredible numbers of folks who don't really care we are in a global pandemic? Yes.

I know we are I simply tend to not worry so much and if I do get really sick then I will worry but that is about 2% to 3% of people in mostly higher risk categories. Why waste my energy and lower my immune system for such a small chance and if I do get it then I will need that energy and strong immune response. I wear my mask, wash my hands and all that stuff. I just don't worry about it since there is medical books with about 1500 pages full of diseases. That is just the way I am can't change it. If this was Ebola I would be terrified.

To me all diseases can be deadly or at least most. But like cancer or HIV some get it real bad and some recover and live normal lives. I have seen it many times with cancer some worry endlessly and some battle it. I tend not to worry about small percentages and if ever I fall into that bracket then deal with it the best I can. When I was younger I would drive myself crazy with worry but in the end it as just making me sick so I learned to just role with the punches.

I wish they would have segments on TV where people have been threw this and talk about it so we can see with our own eyes how it truly is. They do show some reports like this but not much. Blur their faces if it is a privacy issue. People need to see this kinda stuff.

My family is fairly young, so we have not been super concerned, but we try to be careful for the rest of our extended family. I really miss the way life was before Covid though. I told my wife today I think I have been slowly going down mentally... I just miss getting to go do things like we used to. Church, school, shopping, seeing friends, going out to eat, etc. My youngest just turned 4. This thing is going on about 1/4th of her life now. I wonder how much she really remembers pre-covid.

Hopefully in a few years things will get back to normal. Personally I have my doubts they will ever get back to 100% normal as we knew it. Maybe 70%. But things will change. Like less people will travel the globe, different types of employment to replace a lot of restaurants, a lot more shopping done online, people working from home, more home schooling and so on.

I am not insensitive (I have almost lost my entire family to all sorts of diseases so I get it. I have been threw ''hell'' many times in my short life so far. I have spent more than half my life in hospitals with sick family members.) I just want to see how people are living threw all this. Always good to get peoples input. On this forum we get people from all over that can share their stories.

@OP Canada has handled it a lot better obviously then we have. Plus the fact that Canada is one of the most sparsely populated places on earth helps.

We are all in the same storm but some of our "boats" are closer to shore then others

I'm in high school and my classes are all online. Since it started in March, I might have been out of the house in public areas 2-3 times other than that, I'm all at home. My family has to be very careful when ever going out as we frequently are with many family members in high risk. My parents even go grocery shopping for them.
As time goes by, I have gotten used to staying at home all day. Before this, I couldn't stand staying home, always liked going out and about.
