Numasmatic education in a virtual year - how much did it suffer?

pointfivezeropointfivezero Posts: 1,883 ✭✭✭✭✭

As with many of us, the first week of the new year is a time for reflecting. I was just wondering how much my numasmatic education suffered during 2020 - Year of the Lockdown. I'm recently back into the hobby and spent most of the past year in front of my laptop. While I consumed all the YouTube videos, coin forums and auction sites as time would permit, I can't help but wonder how much my education was stunted by the lack of access to the local coin stores, the coin shows and other hands on access to my recently revived passion.

Thoughts?

going from v little numismatic education to discovering these forums over pandemic times last year, I'd have to say my education started skyrocketing - thanks everyone here for sharing knowledge, advice, etc so freely

Yes, I would agree we were able to become "booksmart" but I'm wondering about the virtual vs hands on education. Another question/comment would be - how much did the quality of our purchases suffer from online only mode. I know personally I was disappointed with a few of my online acquistions as opposed to B&M purchases.

Numismatic education is going on virtually if a person seeks it out. I watched a great educational presentation by Daryl Haynor on his new Classic Head Gold book via Zoom, and have attended about 3 national and 2 local Zoom meetings. There is also the NNP, I watched an excellent video on the history of the $ sign yesterday.

Numismatic research is restricted with Covid. I was planning a trip to the National Archives for a week of research last fall, and that has been postponed indefinitely until NARA opens to the public again.

I have done most of my buying with national dealers and auctions for quite a few years, the local B&M coin shops have not had much inventory of interest to me since the internet auctions and sales - over a decade now.

ANS and ANA focused on online content in 2020, and of course NNP has always been exclusively online.

Some things don't translate well, however. I have a box of coins I would dearly love to review in-hand with DWN, and there's simply no substitute for doing this in-person.

I am grateful for CU, our host but more importantly all the characters who populate this numismatic playground. I'm constantly learning and I've saved dozens of websites of knowledge. Peace Roy

Self study didn't change; maybe was improved.

Spelling noom-asthmatic may have suffered.

I have been show/shop deprived since I moved from WA state... However, I have compensated through forums, books, correspondence and websites. While I would dearly love to return to shows, I believe the only thing I have really missed is the extensive 'hands on' experience of coin shows. Cheers, RickO

No doubt that live classes or hands-on activities are always the best. The ANA has tried very hard to offer virtual classes for different numismatic subjects. A full slate is scheduled for 2021: https://info.money.org/elearning

For beginners or novices, the ANA has the Diploma Program for home study.
