1979 Philadelphia penny. What happened here. This mint damage?

It's not pliers because the reverse isn't damaged. Unless of course something was placed between the pliers and the coin on the reverse to avoid any damage and also to fool anyone who thought it might be damage caused by squeezing the coin with pliers. If that's the case then whoever is responsible is very clever and probably trying to mess with the mind of anyone who is trying to figure out what caused the mysterious gouges on the obverse side of the coin just above the date. I think it was pliers. Definitely pliers.

Definitely a possibility. If your theory is correct then probably a small c-clamp was also involved. Pliers and a small c-clamp. And two popsicle sticks placed between the coins and the small c-clamp so as to avoid damaging the coins. Or one popsicle stick that was cut in half. Pliers, a small c-clamp, and one popsicle stick cut in half. Simple.

Astro-Pops are the best. Cherry. Astro-Pops are just about the only good thing Summertime has going for it around here. That and checking out the chicks at the beach......while sucking on a cherry Astro-Pop. 🍒🐥

There is displaced metal and it's slightly out of round where the rim is missing. This would not occur if it was struck with a die and collar. Regardless of how the damage occurred, it's still damage, since it couldn't happen during the mint process

Timmy......Do whatever you want with it. But it's not just pliers.

...pants were pretty tight in 1979...my guess is it got caught in the zipper of some butthuggers while laying down and using pliers to put them on
