What's Going On Here?

Thoughts on what this token depicts? Maybe chopping firewood and then sitting by the fire? Hard to tell the obverse from the reverse. Curious to know your thoughts.

Work all day, then have a drink while warming up in front of the fire?

A Native American from the eastern part of North America (note the form of dress and feathers) gathering wood during the summer (note the flowers) and then sitting by the fire and having a drink in the winter. It is an interesting folk art piece and may be of much more interest to that market than to coin collectors. By the time of the French & Indian War some eastern tribes had adopted a style of living that was not all that much different from the European colonists. This piece could be from the US or Canada.

Looks like the man is out working and the G. F. (girlfriend) is sitting home relaxing with his money bag.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

    Very interesting.

The side where they are walking...no idea what they are carrying. The brick walkway and flowers are probably important clues.

The other side....I see them relaxing with a drink and bag of money.

Someone has suggested Dutch origin. Those flowers may be tulips.

    I agree again.

Maybe the answer is a combination.

What is the host coin? I see some traces of lettering.

I don't think it's a "they". I considered it, but I think it is just the way it is carved. I think it is one figure on each side.

    I'm revising my interpretation:

The Native American is not gathering wood but rather preparing to shear sheep to gather wool for winter clothing/bedding etc. The sheep shears is far oversized to emphasize the intent.

There are lots of sharp eyes on this forum. Thanks for identifying the sheep shears.

Sheep shears! That’s why I defer to you forum members. Never would have thought.

I looked online and they definitely look like sheep shears, but they are so darn big.

Maybe the token celebrates a big sheep shearing harvest and the other side shows him celebrating a big harvest.

That's not a bag of money. It's an old stye bottle and contains the grain spirits from which he refills his cup.

See now I focused on the ladder back chair, looks early. Also the deep hearth with smoke shelf. I'm trippin here. GF is obviously Geoff Fusterpuck, of course! I agree that deciphering the coin lettering could be a nice clue. Peace Roy

Thst occurred to me, too, but I don't understand why the carver didn't connect the pipe to the rest.

Maybe he thought it would make it to confusing? :o:D

FWIW, I knew a Scottish guy who played the bagpipes and drank heavily, so it fits. ;)
