Error Experts- What's going on with this Massachusetts state quarter?

I bought this on the cheap as a filled die error at a show yesterday. I liked that only of the center of the coin had any detail and the reverse was HAMMERED, maybe indicating the obverse was struck through something instead. When I got it home and under good lighting and magnification, I noticed a groove running around the inside rim of the obverse and I'm not sure how it got there, other than something outside the mint. What do you think?

    Struck thru grease is what I’m thinking. The reverse being as well struck as it is means something had to be on the obverse filling in the die space.

    Great looking struck-thru grease! These errors can look amazing!

    I've thought about creating such sets with TrueViews. I wonder if anyone is building such sets?

    Weight is 5.73 grams (normal) and ring is good.

    Struck thru, and I think the thin 'inside rim'
    is just a minor anomaly - 'as struck'

    Nice example of a 'struck thru' grease or
    machinery oil error.
