When found with quartz crystals (as it often is), the encrustation of pyrite causes the quartz to form delicate, needle-like points unlike any you've seen before! ... Gold is a very soft metal and will bend or break when you do this; iron pyrite is much harder and won't budge.
I don't believe it's gold...but you can check it with a straight pin or knife. If it's gold, it will not break or chip when you poke it. Gold is soft, not brittle.
Flake a sample off and try to crush it. If it’s gold it flatten out like medal, if not falls apart into crystals.
My guess fools gold as well and a nice sample.
