"Strange Brew" - attraction to a David Kahn SL Half Dollar MS64

CatbertCatbert Posts: 7,828 ✭✭✭✭✭

I'm in an odd mood tonight, scanning dealer inventories, and I keep coming back to this coin. I don't have the funds, but if I did, I think I'd buy it. The thing about this coin, though, is that it is not what usually attracts me (nicely toned type). It just looks original as hell and I bet it looks even better in hand. You know as a MS64, the pics don't do it justice. Have you ever found yourself weirdly attracted to something outside your norm?

So then an old song starts going off in my head from 1967 - Cream's "Strange Brew" (sung by Eric Clapton). I envision this coin being the girl referenced in the song...... sticking to me! :D

"Strange brew - killin' what's inside of you

She's a witch of trouble in electric blue
In her own mad mind she's in love with you
With you
Now what you gonna do?
Strange brew - killin' what's inside of you

She's some kind of demon messin' in the glue
If you don't watch out it'll stick to you
To you
What kind of fool are you?
Strange brew - killin' what's inside of you

On a boat in the middle of a raging sea
She would make a scene for it all to be
Ignored
And wouldn't you be bored?
Strange brew - killin' what's inside of you

Strange brew, strange brew, strange brew, strange brew
Strange brew - killin' what's inside of you"

What say you? Do you find this coin attractive? Ever had the feeling I'm experiencing with a coin outside your normal?

P.S. and no, I'm not drunk or high :s

The color doesn't bother me at all and actually like it really but the lack of luster from images would worry me a bit. The lack of contact marks at a grade of 64 leads me to believe it's a dead coin. Give me a blazingly lustrous contact marked 64 any day. That said I'm judging the coin from a picture and could be wrong but I'd like to see some more contact marks from personal experience.

I'm a rare one that doesn't really care about rainbow colors I like ANY colors as long as the luster is blazing and I buy it's originality or unmessed with status. A subdued rainbow toned coin is worse than an "ugly" toned coin that's alive with luster to me.

I like the song better and yes I am high on Gin and Tonics with a night cap of Baileys.

I have a copy of Cream (vinyl) around here somewhere, and Disraeli Gears, too. I bet that coin has swirling luster under the right light (it has a green bean too) . Looks totally original. My taste, and wallet, lean towards XF/AU examples that I think are similarly attractive. I have found that when I keep going back, over and over to look at a coin, there is a pretty good chance that I will buy it and be happy with it.

I like the coin, but I love the song. B)

For a 64 I would hope to see some luster.......... Maybe Kahn needs to switch photographers(?) or ?

I’d always assumed it was “GIRL what’s inside of you”, so count me disappointed.

I love that look on AU55-58 coins.
I just like more brilliance on 64s.
Even dirty 64s shouldn’t look washed out, as this one does in the image.

I like it very much as others have said...at the AU level. Tremendously attractive, but I it would seem to have wear on the high points and muted luster at best.

call him and discuss, he will tell you the truth about appearance in hand.

It just has a thick skin, likely with nice luster underneath.
I haven't seen CAC sticker too many 64s with "dead surfaces" and "wear on the high points" but I suppose it's possible.

I have experienced that type of attraction to a coin... a couple of times. I did purchase both of them. Cheers, RickO

I'm guessing it would be very difficult for him to change photographers.

Scuba makes a good point about the thick skin. Going to DK's website there are alot of coins showing luster so I retract my comment above and it is good photography. It is partly the lighting for sure but it is hard to capture luster on coins with thick skins. If one wants a coin that clearly has never been messed with too much (if at all) and has a nice thick, decades to acquire skin, this is a great one. This is why it beaned, this is a CAC type of coin for sure.

Actually, I prefer the comedy "Strange Brew" starring Rick Moranis - it's a stupid movie that becomes one of those "guilty pleasures" you can't help watching over and over again. The McKenzie Brothers were great, eh?

Don’t like the toning. Seated halves that look like they just came out of a mint bag is what I like although I am usually on the hunt for nice toning.

I like original coins, but this one, I'm not real crazy about.

Toning is not that attractive and luster looks muted.

However; I love the detail. Sharp strike.
